You may have heard about Webmission, the trade mission of which TechCrunch UK was a part, to take 20 UK startups to network with investors and startups in Silicon Valley. Well, we’re at it again. This time TCUK worked with Chinwag (a UK digital media community) the UK Trade and Investment government agency and law firm Winston and Strawn to come up with 21 UK companies to take to Web 2.0 Expo in New York. They will network like crazy and talk up the industry over here. Alas, I’ll be stuck in London covering Seedcamp, but TCUK be covering their activities over in NYC remotely.

The full list of selected companies is at Digital-mission.org but here’s the skinny: B View; Harvest Digital; Head London; Headshift; Huddle; Idio Mag; KMP Interactive Marketing & Technology; Littleloud; Market Sentinel; Mippin; Quick TV; Slice the Pie; Smarkets; Sweemo; Tactile CRM; Tempero; UGame; UnLtd World; Unruly Media; Veedow and World TV.

The advisory board included ex-Dragon’s Den star, Doug Richards; Tech Crunch editor, Mike Butcher (er, me); and Seedcamp CEO, Reshma Sohoni. Chinwag is also working on a mission to SXSW Interactive, which is worth applying for.

  • I’m pretty glad we got the nod on that Mike (KMP). We are putting a ton of effort into Social Media so it will be exciting to share ideas and stories with our overseas peers.

@ Jake (Tactile CRM) – I am delighted you are there too. Congratulations!

  • you must think I’m stalking you across channels today, but … there is no space in Headshift (as we shout on demonstrations ;-) . We are Headshift, not Head Shift.

    thanks mate!

  • Really delighted that UnLtdWorld (to echo Lee: we’re also a one-word entity :) to have been selected alongside such a fantastic array of companies.

  • @ Paul Fabretti Really pleased we made it, should be a really useful exercise and will be great to have the opportunity to talk with everyone there.

Only downside is I’ll miss the TechCrunch UK event :(

  • I’m sure this is Chinwag’s problem not TCUKs… but to echo Alberto and Lee, we’re idiomag not idio mag for what its worth…

    should be fun :)

  • I’m trying to avoid being pedantic, but it’s interesting how Doug Richard gets called Doug Richards quite a lot. I seem to recall Evan Davis pronouncing his name that way which might have started it? Interesting in any case from a purely geeky language point of view..!

  • We are chuffed too! Ali Mitchell, our CEO is attending form Huddle. I am sure all you guys will have tons of fun!

  • Can’t wait to represent Smarkets in NYC. Really looking forward to meeting all of the other UK startups. Too bad you couldn’t make it, Mike.

  • I didn’t apply for Webmission and I regret that silly choice… so now I’m very pleased that Veedow made it for Digital Mission.
It’d be great to have a feedback from the judging panel… Mike, do you know if anything like that is possible?

  • Just wanted to say on behalf of the Chinwag team that were awestruck by the calibre of companies that applied given the very short time-limits we were operating under, but I think that’s testimony to the buoyancy, creativity and profound depth of the UK’s digital scene.

Apologies for some naming errors that may have been passed on. Normally I write Chinwag’s press releases but I was on holiday for a few days and the internet pixies made a few little slip-ups in my absence. I’ve blogged it with all things present and correct here: http://snipurl.com/3bubc

Big congrats to all the finalists!
