Truphone is a fantastic alternative if you don't like cell phone monthly fees. It works fantastic almost anywhere. Great also for IM. I give the company an A. And I'm a teacher.

Compared to Truphone, Betamax/Voipstunt/Freecall has *much* better rates, dial-through numbers worldwide - allowing phonebook integration, great voice quality and works from any phone. That's what I use.

@ Alex van Someren, you might be closer at the actual situation, but StartupMeme reported on the web, "EQO our Road ahead is closed"

http://startupmeme.com/eqo-our-road-ahead-is-closed/

So I am not sure if the news is correct but it is all over the web.

I guess in tech crunch times it even more true: "x million users x ZERO = ZERO", so it is going to be interesting to see how these apps play out. At the end economic principles have to be in place to pay for developer, marketing, product development and management; the best example is Google, once you are profitable you can do a lot of good things. So I guess ((truphone)) with Gold Standard alternative Mobile Calling Apps for so many platforms now is a great example, every additional user allows the company to develop on more platforms and enable a better mobile calling community as an alternative Global Mobile Voice Provider. The world of local Mobile Phone Operators was the start, ((truphone)) is a true Global Alternative and the number of devices you are able to use truely use ((truphone)) on is growing by the day.

Equally I see the first wave of apps in Java, but when you really look at the core you have to do a lot more to enable WiFi and GSM calling centrally inside a device. A lot harder than the great apps so far launched from ebuddy, Mig33, etc. but equally a lot more useful in day to day utilization. I rely truely on my ((truphone)) apps during my business calls.

Disclosure: We are an early backer of ((truphone))

Just to clarify Mike's article, Truphone has built a very clever system that allows us to offer cheap calls for our customers. But these calls are not subsidised in any way, shape or form. Geraldine Wilson, CEO Truphone
