This post has now been updated with the following:

Update II: This post caused a lot of controversy because in its original form it showed some very graphic pictures from the Israel/Palestinian conflict happening at the moment. Something you'd expect when a war was happening. Unfortunately the detail of the post was lost in the debate about the appropriateness of the imagery, plus I was accused of favouring one side over another. This was profoundly not the intention, but it was clear I had stumbled unwittingly into a political area because the post largely carried pictures of Palestinians under siege and no pictures of Israelis under rocket attacks. Unfortunately this was not done to favour one side - I simply couldn't find any of the latter kinds of pictures on the site, simply because no Israelis had uploaded any at that time. This is clearly a failing of a picture agency which relies purely on user-generated content, in that it leaves it to "the crowd" to gather the footage - and the crowd is not usually out to be balanced. I've now removed the imagery, other than the original, to illustrate the piece. Comments are now closed on the matter.

Eli D - The article is not a fail because the content the agency will carry is relevant to the topic of UGC. You also didn't read it properly. There are no statistics here.

This post started out promising. The first few paragraphs were very informative about Demotix and UGC companies but then the paragraphs on the conflict weakened the flow and purpose of the post.

It's one thing to have these photos and to say where they're from and make a brief reference to highlight your point, but to include statistics and personal stories and to emphasize THOSE has NOTHING to do with Demotix, just your opportunistic way to bring the conflict to technology and get more readers. If I wanted to read a political blog, I'd read the Huffington Post or something else. This article is a FAIL.

The problem is not with user generated content. The problem is with writers in "professional" media selecting some content over another to project their own views.
You gave a wonderful example of the problem with old/centeralized media, pretending to be objective while being completely biased.

While revenue-sharing is a laudable idea, is their strategy (as a *business*) sustainable more generally, given what some experienced in this field (such as Kyle MacCrae's point - "Picture editors won’t come to Demotix looking for pics - they’ll expect to be spoon-fed content prepared to industry standards as per all the other commercial agencies") have said here in the comments?

Lonely Planet are also venturing into the revenue-sharing field, paying amateur bloggers for content (see: http://www.paidcontent.co.uk/entry/419-swn-lonely-planet-to-share-ad-revenue-with-amateur-travel-bloggers/ and http://inside-digital.blog.lonelyplanet.com/2008/11/14/working-with-bloggers/), but they're a massive business, the website was originally subsidised by the long-established print part of the enterprise, plus now they're part of BBC Worldwide, so one would expect they can afford to absorb the slight financial hit the rev-share element will precipitate.

I agree that the ability of major publishers to cover events globally in detail is diminishing, but maybe it's still too soon for Demotix to benefit..? I'd be interested to hear others thought on this.

Ok, I think everyone's had their say now. I'd like to thank everyone who contributed to the discussion about the merits or otherwise of a picture/video news agency which will run on user-generated contributions, which was what this story was about. The fact that it used imagery from the site was there to illustrate the rawness that this will entail. I think it's also important to remember that because of the declining revenues in traditional media, news organisations will increasingly be unable to cover these kinds of stories. In the end, all we may have will be user generated content, from either side of any conflict. All there will be will be a flood of Twitter posts, blurry cameraphone pictures and video, and maybe a lone freelance journalist or enthusiastic blogger, flying in a day later. Perhaps that will be enough to alert to world to new wars, riots, protests, acts of barbarity. Let's hope so.

I for one think, Israel should kill all those arabs, get rid of every single one of them, then one day perhaps after 50 odd years we will get a famous director named abdel maged(perhaps) who will make movies about the "The New Holocaust" and we will have amazing movies to watch year after year, perhaps even some oscar and winners!!. I am so tired of same old same old anyways.

This "startup story" is a simple front for a political statement by Mike Butcher. This not a new hot startup in London --- rather he decided to wrap his personal political views (an anti-Israel perspective) in a tech startup story.

We should expect better from TechCrunch which last time I checked is a tech blog, not a political blog with an ideological perspective.

@RoyK and others - just a word in defence of Demotix. This company is positioned as a *news* agency. There are challenges aplenty with a UGC model of news gathering - verification, bias (intentional or otherwise), scale, and many others - but in that context it is, and has to be, perfectly valid to publish legitimate news imagery, including carnage and death, subject to whatever editorial guidelines and sensitivities the company cares to adopt. As indeed it's perfectly valid for Mike to republish that imagery here in the context of reviewing a news org startup.

(I say this as the guy who pulled Scoopt's launch press release on July 7th 2005 because it coincided with 52 people being murdered in London. We had an image of Concorde ablaze on the home page and the connection between cash and content was too close for comfort on that occasion.)

Mike,

I think what everyone is trying to say is that you didn't exercise very good (smart?) judgement in the way you wrote this article.

Even when Mike was covering the pre-election issues for TC, he was always neutral no matter what gaffes or flash stories were popping up on a daily basis.

By zeroing in on the dead Palestinians (which is a tragedy no matter which side you are on) you have taken a small snapshot of a much greater problem. The readers of this blog are here for technology but they will always have a political opinion - this just isn't the right forum for it.

Gaza is happening now, people are dying on both sides and emotions are very raw. Injecting this angle into a story about a potentially promising business just isn't good judgement.

Just a little clarification, Anti-Semitism has nothing to do with the "Semite race", it is a term used SOLELY to describe a biased hate towards the Jewish people.
Crank up a dictionary so you don't look so ignorant next time, sheesh.

And Demotix, thanks for encouraging us to send pictures of carnage and death. That's a great way to promote your business.

Wow, Mike's being so brave for aping what all other British journalists do, that is being an apologist for Palestinian terrorism while simultaneously being outraged at any military response to their actions.

I think it's the tinfoil hat you've been wearing.

Those images, mostly of dead Palestinian civilians, never Israeli ones (lucky if they show Israeli army casualties) appear in European media precisely because of their anti-Israeli bias, not because of their alleged fairness and quality of journalism.

I know that in you're mind your trying to educate the clueless American public about how awful Israel is and how pure Hamas is, but that simply teaches us that you, and many of your European media cohorts are propagandists with little to know understanding of the principles of journalism.

So your goal in life is what? being some pathetic imitation of a Guardian propagandist while your day job is covering technology?

It is good to have goals in life. Maybe being honest about your agenda would be a good start.

Mike, claiming that a picture about a Palestinian terrorist released by israel from prison is somehow balance shows everybody just how biased you are. Balance would mean showing Israeli civilians killed in Hamas shelling, rocketing and suicide bombings, just as gruesome. Balance would be referring to UGC videos documenting how Israelis live under the constant threat of death with 15 seconds to take shelter, for years now, not just 4 days.

You have an agenda, your post is propaganda, and you're too much of a weasel to admit it. Simply reporting about a startup, indeed.
