One thing I’ve really been looking for in Tweetdeck, my preferred Twitter desktop client, is a way to just write a Tweet to someone, either a direct message or an @ reply. Ideally I’d be able to search for my Twitter pals in the client, either by real name or Twitter user name. However, we are now one step closer to this with the release today of TweetDeck’s handy new feature – username auto-complete. When you start typing an @ or direct message (or typing “@” anywhere in a tweet) the autocomplete window is triggered and Tweetdeck brings up a list of your friends as you type. Here’s a video to explain how it works:
Tweetdeck is pushing out the update to all users shortly but it’s also available here on their blog for manual install or here is the direct download URL. Not that the update has not been extensively tested so installation is at your own risk. If you are unsure then hold off until the next full TweetDeck update.

this is not a killer feature. this is trivial.
The unfortunately named “Spaz” client has already had this for quite some time.
I just installed this new version. The new auto-complete feature is nice, but I think describing it as a “killer” feature is a bit of an over statement.
The feature will help folks reduced typos in user names, but very often user names are added automatically just by replying to or forwarding an existing tweet.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m glad to have this new feature. But when I read “killer feature”, I have to admit, I felt a little let down when I saw what it was.
And yet you still cant change the font.
Username autocomplete is a nice to have feature, but if you @reply instead of using a specific reply button or link (like the little curl arrows on twitter.com or Followize) you don’t get Twitter’s conversation. When the reply is displayed, it will look like you replied to just the latest tweet rather than a specific tweet. This creates that annoying Twitter non-sequitur effect.
Killer feature? auto complete? am I missing something here?
