Trusted Places relaunches

Perhaps spooked by increasing competition in the UK, what with Yelp launching here, Trusted Places has relaunched its site, with a few new twists, one of which is cold hard cash.

The site is now offering users £50 for every business that they refer to the site that signs up to a premium account. The business in turn gets £40 of advertising for free.

There’s also a simplified design it’s also introducing quick reviews, where a user can write a short message and then the site matches that with potential locations. The site also now integrates with Facebook connect and is approaching a million uniques a month, they say.

I like the changes to the site – it looks snappier and I’m sure the incentives will have an impact.

However, I think that trustedplaces and the other big players in the field (yelp/qype/tipped etc) are missing the point. Simply put, a 5 star rating for venues just doesn’t make sense – venue reviews are too time sensitive. Aggregating scores out for periods greater than about 1 month simply detracts from what people are interested in; what’s it like *now*.

A better model might be that employed by other startups such as http://www.thescene.com or http://www.goodrec.com which steer away from 5 star ratings and make more sense because of it imo.

Finally, a come back. It’s great that they’re not intimidated by the big player but instead compete with them.

Congratulations to Walid and Sokratis on the new update and excellent figures. Good to see users can earn some decent money from the site too.

Do you guys really “spend zero money on marketing” though..?

That’s smart- I have problems with Yelp because it’s user-generated with no incentive. I can search for local restaurants and find one a half a mile away but not across the street.

I agree, Yelp isn’t perfect, but is still great at finding places nearby. A $50 incentive like Trusted Places though would be a great addition to yelp.
