[...] So can it really be legal to copy a whole user interface? This is an interesting question as it more or less affects the so-called German copycat industry., an accusation which has grown over the last few years - although is, to be fair, starting to fade. As the TechCrunch Berlin event recently heard, there is a new movement to start innovating. [...]

Your community is your most important asset when starting a new business - the only truely effective way to gather valuable feedback. Therefore protecting ideas has no value. It's simple, and everybody in the SF Bay applies this. In Europe, we protect our ideas as Lukasz explains it. That's the main issue. A great Speech of Lukasz and an even greater summary of Mike.

Very good speech, but a bit strange coming from him.
StudiVZ is the very definition of a copycat without any shame.
The cool part about his speech is in the 4 key differences about US and Europe, but we could add like 10 others.

Right message, but from a bit from the wrong person. His StudiVZ is beeing sued from Facebook because of beeing very similar (I don´t say copycat) and SpreadShirt looks damn like a Threadless to me. So he made his money with those kind of ventures and is now asking others to go for the riskier (but yes, bigger winning if succesful) innovation mode, which more often ends in a complete desaster than a copycat which does more often financially well. Anyway a good speech.

I think there's plenty of inovation here in Europe, it's just that founds are harder to find here.

Hey great post, innovators are what we need I would agree.

The fact is that 95% of the copycats, will make less combined than the 5% who innovate.

I'm sad I missed out on this talk. It seems like Lukasz delivered a very important message to the right audience. Hopefully his message will be heard by politicians and through that spread to the general public.

You got my humble support, Lukasz!
