Choose a co-founder who complements your skills, not mirrors them. Whilst you must have similar aims for the business, you don't want to be cut from the same mould - you need different skills to overcome the obstacles and you need to have different views so you can choose the best path (for your aims).

Nicholas - I have interviewed several female entrepreneurs who are in business with their partners (e.g. the founders of Flickr, GetSatisfaction, SlideShare, Ycombinator) and it seems to work for them. That doesn't mean that it will for everyone. One of the reasons they give for working together is that they would never see each other otherwise.

Chose your girlfriend/boyfriend/spouse?

You're kidding me. This seems to me to be terrible advice. Start-ups are stressful, emotional rollercoasters which need a lot of hard work. Relationships need hard work too. It's tough to have the commitment on both of them, and doubly tough to do it when you are both so deeply involved in the business.

Not to mention what happens to your relationship if the business fails or your business if the relationship fails.

Treat with caution.

Choose a co-founder who shares a similar mind-set first, then trust him/her.

You'll have much more time and energy to spend on executing rather than debating ideas. Oh well, and getting your startup up & running will be much more fun, then ;)
