Let’s all hit a cinema at once to see District 9

The latest Star Trek movie seemed like a great opportunity to get everyone in the London tech scene out for a geek-out session at a cinema. But despite talking to cinemas about private screenings I drew a blank. But there’s clearly a crowd-sourcing option here which is this: TechCrunch readers all buying tickets at the same cinema for the same day and screening time.

District 9 looks like your classic sci-fi fare (and by endorsed by Peter Jackson no less). So I suggest we get sourcing a good cinema in London where we can all pre-book tickets and (cough) it’s on a day I can come (i.e. not next week please). I don’t know when District 9 comes out but it’s in the “the summer” so I’m guessing August or at least it’ll still be out in early September.

What do you all think?

I think that sounds a good idea. Did you try the Curzon Soho ? They hire screens out for private showing and things, it’ll depend on if they’re getting that movie though.

That said – crowd sourcing means you don’t have to stress about minimum numbers and deposits are anything else!

    Couple of niggles:

    - it’s not ‘by’ Peter Jackson, he’s just endorsing it (like Tarantino did for Hero and Hostel)
    - it’s not out for another 4 weeks, and regular cinemas tend not to announce screening times let alone booking options until a few days before a film will be shown (unless it’s a massive release… which this isn’t)
    - a private screening will cost a fortune, and we’ve no idea if the film is any good (no previous pedigree) to warrant spending that much on going to see it

However, a meet-up is a fun idea as always, but maybe wait until nearer the time.

Other suitable hire-able venues, if people want to take the risk, might include The Roxy Bar And Screen by London Bridge and the Electric Cinema at Notting Hill (both have armchairs and sofas and a bar at the back!), and also the various London ones in the Picturehouse chain.

Lots more info on the film at http://uk.imdb.com/title/tt1136608/

    Heck, count me in

Since 4th Sept is a Friday night and lots of people would rather do something else, I’m thinking Sept 8, a Tuesday. What say you all?

  • http:// Basheera Khan

Sep 8th suits me fine. :-)

  • Ross Tweedie

    sounds like a great idea.

    These venues are hireable:

    http://www.everymancinema.com/

And they are smaller, so should not cost as much, although they are “premium” cinemas so cost more than some on a per ticket basis.

how many does the hospital club cinema hold?

    Sept 8th works well – I’m in!

Could book an Everyman cinema (the one in Belsize Park is particularly nice and happens to be quite close to me :)

Soho House has a private cinema if you can find a film to play …

screw that, I would rather flood a public place. My experience of trying to organise with these premium cinemas is that they are a pain in the proverbial.

    Not enough Nick.

  • http://twitter.com/mikebutcher Mike Butcher

I’m thinking more central. And big.

  • http://twitter.com/sgy Grace

    I’m in!

  • http://twitter.com/mikebutcher Mike Butcher

Ok, all we need now is a big central london cinema we can pre-book at. Any ideas?

I’d love to come but I have to see my auntie that weekend. Do you want to come over to my house and play Guitar Hero on the weekend of the 26th? Don’t ask Mike to come though- he did a smelly in my parents toilet on my birthday.

  • http://www.calvinrobinson.co.uk/ Calvin Robinson

    I’m in.

You could take ticket fares via eventbrite or something, then book all the seats up front?

    I want to come! Wooop!

  • http://www.i-boy.com/weblog/ George Nimeh

We did this on a small scale for Star Trek at the IMAX. It was sooo much fun.

Can’t wait for this. Hope I’m in town. (So, not the end of August, pleeeeeeeze.)

    @iboy

    I’m so there!

  • http://www.sumption.org Dan Sumption

    I’m in!

And, though it’s not in London, I’d like to give a big-up to the Showroom cinema in Sheffield, who have weekly “desert island cinema” screenings where you get to book the cinema & choose the film (with any leftover seats offered to members of the public).
