Very nice and informative topic. I certainly agree that in everything you do the first steps are the hardest but the next steps will be more easy than one could possibly expect.

Vision is the most important part in every formula of the business success. Having a very attainable, realistic vision can help a business to move forward towards their goal.

Very good information. Startups are very difficult. We've been in beta at http://www.workfobooks.com for about 7 months and are finally about to emerge to version 1 with all new options for college students. We will be taking some of your advice. Thanks

This is however the same recipe as the User Centered Design process in product design, or even Voice of the Customer in Six Sigma. However, I do like the way he tells it. People remember stories and can remember them much more clearly then learning concepts or memorizing definitions. It’s very well told for someone that doesn’t want to sit through all those classes.

How do you know which users to ask questions of? Whose needs/problems are you trying to solve? The OP talks about putting a product in front of customers by seeing who might be interested enough to click on a google or facebook ad so you've effectively gained yourself a "validated lead" who has the problem you're solving. In your approach it seems like you have a hypothesis about who the customers are (that may not be the right ones?!) and you ask them questions - doesnt seem like quite the same thing.

There's some practical and useful information in here, but what about the fact that he and his partners think they can succeed starting a company in an they know nothing about? "The only problem was our fantasy sports knowledge was limited and we were 3,000 miles from our target customers." I personally think passion and domain expertise are equally as important as process. Maybe I'm just old school.

Four Steps To The Epiphany is certainly a book worth buying. Could not get the book on Amazon or various other sites, but it seems to be available at Waterstones still:

I think the part about actually asking people what they think is the hardest part; therefore many companies don't do it. I've been needing to go out and start doing this myself, but I just haven't yet. These are some good ideas about how to focus questions to ask and get a much better idea of what your potential customers actually want.
Good article.
