Great article, I've just started with a start up (exactly like no. one on the list) and it's the managing expectations which is the hardest. They think that sending out one press release will bring 1m new site members willing to pay a membership fee in the first week and I'm only working for them one day a week......aaaargh.

"Public Relations is one of those rare business services with no value aside from the amount people assign to it. "

As opposed to advertising and its fake AEV model? You're not referring to 'value,' you're referring to an easily quantifiable and measurable - and ultimately arbitrary - justification of spending money.

The value lies in influencing purchase decisions through transparent and open communications, not reaching the greatest numbers of people and showing and declaring success because you've achieved some magical ROI number.

Saying it has no value is an artifact of the broadcast model, as outdated as AEV itself.

Really great post Jon. Having recently joined Splendid Communications as Digital Director, and having run start-ups since 2003, I appreciate both sides of the coin. Working with start-ups as clients can be so rewarding; the energy and creative thinking bleeds into the relationship and you can become enthused. One thing I would add however is that start-ups need quite a lot of hand holding, at least at first, and you can easily over-service on fee time.
