The way I understand it most of the talk about spam from Netlog comes from its early days, when there were in fact a couple of questionable tactics in place. That said, I think for the past couple of years they’ve been doing it the right way;

Claims about unsolicited e-mails are absolutely false. You have to explicitly agree to it and proceed through different steps to send such invites to your contacts.

Do not fall pray to the numbers folks. I have never been to this site, but I do remember, people getting spammed with emails. If you unfortunately sign up, they scan your email account and send unsolicited emails to everyone and has got a lot of people in trouble. So next time you see a email from a friend asking you to sign-up, just delete it and report it as spam.

Netlog is using the same not really ethical techniques to gain new registrations as Hi5 did: sending automated emails to contacts of those registered & sending automated messages on other social sites after asking for username/passwords of those. I’ve gotten quite a few “invitations” this way, all of them are in my spam folder now.
