Streaming services with paid advertising are the way forward. It's a shame the music industry has had to take this route but it makes sense in this climate.

Hi

I run Northern StartUp 2.0 (http://www.nwstartup20.co.uk/nov09), which hosted Managing Growth, part of Tech Entrepreneur Series at which, Steve spoke candidly about We7.com.

Based on discussions with SteveP, WE7.com will remain a web based product without adding a desktop application such as that offered by Spotify.

In terms of preference, my kids prefers We7.com over spotify. The adults seem to prefer Spotify over We7.com. Whilst most of us, the adults will learn to ignore the adverts served after every track and like product that sits in the background whilst we work, kids like the interactivity offered by We7 over spotify.

Just my two pence worth...

Best regards
Manoj

That's it. Basically, the mobile offering can't be ad-supported, as is the current We7 model. Point one. Point two is that even a premium mobile offering will likely raise We7's profile enough to in-turn drive more non-paying users to the site and that could tip the balance of 'sustainable growth'. Purdham's argument is that Spotify's approach, treating the model as freemium, isn't sustainable. Too fast, too soon. The numbers don't add up. Need to grow the advertising side inline with user numbers.

So they don't want to release an app that will be part of a premium service because it will drive too many new users to the advertising side?
