‘Pet project’ CeeVee sold after only 6 months in beta

This has got to be one of the fastest exits we’ve seen for a while. Simplified online CV builder CeeVee has actually now been sold after only launching into a public beta in July last year. Then again, it was only started by Romania-based and British ex-pat entrepreneur Lee Wilkins as a pet project.

Lateral Romania, a technology software provider, has acquired the site. Terms were undisclosed. Lateral runs sites like Jobberbase.com (open-source job board software) and job aggregators Job-job.co.uk, Jobjob.ro and Jobber.ro (an IT specialist recruitment website in Romania).

Wilkins says initial partnership discussions eventually turned into a sale. He says Lateral “has a lot more resources on board and expertise in the job market” than CeeVee was going to be able to acquire quickly. Wilkins will will stay on board until the migration completes.

The appeal of the simpler interface of these CV builder sites has seen something of a goldrush with sites like VisualCV and JobSpice appearing. Part of the reason is that LinkedIn doesn’t allow you to export or share your resume in a widgety, social way (as yet), as these sites tend to do.

I know a great CV builder. I think it’s called Microsoft Word. It’s got formatting, bullets, the whole lot!

  • Sam S

    Congratulations to CeeVee.

  • Alex Brooks

    MS word sucks big time
try parsing the data. try to manipulate thousands of CVs written in MS word. yuk

  • Mihai

@Dave: You’re right, MS Word is great until you have to pay for it, or you want to share your CV with other people (maybe using other platforms than MS), or you want to access it online from a mobile device.

  • Dave

Share with other platforms, you mean email it to a recruiter? Recruiters still want CV’s in Word, and they are the end user of a CV. A recruiter often has to change a CV before sending it to a client. So for now, and for many years to come MS Word will be the prefered format for a CV.

CeeVee is trying to fix a problem that does not exist.

  • Alex Brooks

@ Dave – not the recruiters I know. Word is awful.. Usability, Sixteen million styles of CVs etc.

recruiters then take the word CVs and copy + paste in their tools or parse them with some tools. that’s why word isnt good.

  • Dave

There will always be different styles of CV, there is no 1 universal CV template, and this tool, along with other CV builders just adds to the number of formats. I think we all know word is crap, but online builders are no better, and job seekers will not adopt this technology quickly.

Congratulations to the guys at CeeVee. The app was very nice. Well done.

@Alex, we actually do exactly that at Jobsket.

    Cheers.

Before MS Word was in widespread use recruiters probably insisted on a paper CV too!

Sites like CeeVee and SkillsLog.com are pushing things further, standardising CVs, adding structure and semantics to enable sharing and mashing of CV data with other sites, allowing people to interact with each other based on their skills/knowledge, or allowing recruiters to compare candidates and match to jobs more effectively.

Online recruitment is a huge industry with relatively little innovation so far in terms of matching candidates to positions. Congrats to Lee and best of luck to Lateral taking it forward.

For me as an employer, the CV is the first time I get to see if someone can put together a well formatted document.

I want to see how someone presents information about themselves in a document; a lot of what we do requires people to disseminate information via written documents.

I guess if they use services like CeeVee (or template) this will tell me if they can use technology solutions to make it easier for themselves.
