Tech companies can Help Haiti, so get on this list and use #TechHaiti on Twitter
by Mike Butcher
on January 19, 2010

You’re a tech company in ecommerce that can donate a percentage of sales. You’re a social platform with a large amount of spare ad inventory. Whatever kind of tech company you are, you can do something for Haiti, whose recent earthquake has been described by the UN as the worst crisis it has ever faced.

So all this week we plan to update this post with information on acts of generosity by the tech startup community in Europe. Every-time your company does something to help Haiti, we’ll add you to the top of this post and retweet it, as much as we are able.

We’re also going to start this hashtag: #TechHaiti

Why? What can a Twitter hashtag do?

We want aid agencies, NGOs and relief organisations to be able FIND tech companies that could help them easily and, crucially, fast. As everyone now knows, news travels fast on Twitter and a hashtag is one simple, but potentially powerful way to highlight this.

And to clarify, no, we don’t want to ‘own’ this hashtag in any way. Just use it appropriately. Nor does anyone need to link back to this blog post.

The list below shows how tech companies are donating time and resources as well as money to help Haiti.

Contact editorial or leave a comment and we’ll update this list as much as we can (we also have normal work to do in the meantime).

• Yelp London is going to donate all money from Yelp’s Burst Bday coat check to the Red Cross Haiti Earthquake Appeal.

Tom Hayton is doing digital portrait sessions to raise money for Doctors without Borders in Haiti.

OnlineMeetingrooms.com is donating video conferencing for any aid organisation in Haiti.

Umgmediagroup.it in Italy is donating 15% of ads space to Agire, italian’s group of NGOs (Save The children, Action Aid, Terre des hommes, Amref etc)

Evert Bopp is a wireless expert putting together “a team of wireless engineers to actually go out there and build a number of wireless mesh networks in an attempt to re-establish voice & data comms for the relief agencies”.

• Chinwag.com has come up with an open source banner ad campaign you can use on your site here.

Qype-UK is donating its sponsor ad space on its site to the Haiti Relief Effort. All proceeds will be donated to The Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) which is made up of 13 member agencies who provide humanitarian aid in times of disaster.

Mike, I’m using my Airappz contacts to put together a team of wireless engineers to actually go out there and build a number of wireless mesh networks in an attempt to re-establish voice & data comms for the relief agencies but also for the civilian population and authorities. I started this moving through a blogpost: http://bit.ly/8usu8M
Lots of feedback and support so far. I have 5 volunteers so far and will firm up on another 5 before the end of the week. Lines of communications have also been opened with the Irish Min. Defence & USAF to arrange transport. As well as that I have contacted a number of relief agencies and people on the ground in order to coordinate our efforts with them and to offer them access to our networks once they are up and running.
There are also ongoing discussions with a number off hardware manufacturers to secure the neccesary hardware. It’s looking good but I am still looking for more support in all areas.
So if someone is reading this who wants to volunteer to go out there, wants to provide hardware, transport or financial support to cover our expenses please go to the blog and register your support there!
    Thank you.

    Evert.

@Mike – thinking along similar lines. I couldn’t find any banners to help support the campaign to get donations, so ended up making one and asking designers to add their own:

Also reaching out through Chinwag’s community to various agencies to add their own.

I’ve put one of the Chinwag produced adverts on FriendBinder – we don’t normally run adverts so this is only one running on the site.

  • http://Smarta.com Jo Pinkney

Smarta is supporting the Haiti appeal – we’re running the DEC ‘click to donate’ ads as our highest priority ad campaign and we’ll be including a request to donate in this week’s newsletter to our subscribers (TIP: if you need ad creative to run on your site call DEC on 0207 387 0200 and they will send them to you direct)

  • http://Blurtit.com Chris Lee

    Blurtit.com has donated £2,000 to Merlin’s Haiti Appeal (http://www.merlin.org.uk – a member of DEC).

We will also be donating all advertising revenue generated from the Haiti content within the Haiti Earthquake section of Blurtit.com – http://www.blurtit.com/Travel/Places/Caribbean/Haiti/Haiti_Earthquake.

Thanks everyone, what a fantastic idea.

We’ve already taken up one offer of help from Chinwag to host our banners which has been a big help and if anyone else can support the DEC appeal, it’s probably quickest to reach me on Twitter – @DECappeal or use the #TechHaiti tag which I’m keeping an eye on.

Again, thanks for all your support. Response to the Haiti earthquake appeal from social media has been incredible.

    Hey Mike,
we got notice of approval for our French leNewz iPhone app only 12 hours before the seism stroke Haiti.
We would have done something anyhow, but it was too close to miss.
We’ve been offering our ad space to NGOs for Haiti relief from the beginning, and we’ll keep it until at least the end of this month.
With nothing available from media agency or anyone, we took upon ourselves to create 3 simple banners which take users directly to the donation pages of medecinsdumonde.org, croix-rouge.fr and secours-catholique.org.
(We’d be more than happy to give it away to anyone who would ask for it, of course)
We can’t know for sure how much that’ll bring in, but we definitely see very nice clic-thru rate.
    Thanks for your initiative,
    Georges
