This is really a security fail seen as you only see your own chats, and are still logged in when you do all that stuff.

reports that it doesn’t work on Opera or in India/Philippines from friends who have tried it.

Chat is down but the problem still happens for people in the upper left friend request area.. You can view all outstanding friend requests for that user.

Well, now we know how to get Facebook to fix their website. Have one of the TechCrunch family of blogs post details of the problem…

Clearly, this method works better than Facebook’s non-existent customer service…

by the way, if you wanted to view chats of people who are NOT YOUR FRIENDS, all you had to do is change the user number in the url to theirs (the number can easily be found). that way you’re able to view your profile from their perspective (been working for months now) and of course their conversations (but not anymore).

It worked for me. Make sure to press enter when you have the person’s name.

However Facebook chat is now down for maintenance in Sweden at least.

Didn’t work for me. But I tried it a couple of times, then I shared this post on Facebook.
Something weird happened: I went back to my home screen on FB and clicked on Account, my profile pic was gone and so was my name, my name: Everyone.
I went to “my” profile, and came to the profile of Everyone. But there were no info about that profile.
Logged out and in again, and my profile works now, I think.
Was afraid that they deleted my account.

This might kill Facebook.

Worked for me, but the next user I tried it didn’t work for me. I’m assuming they’re slowly rolling out the code change to their load balancers.

It works for me. Chat is disabled in Canada. I am so glad I have never once chatted on Facebook in all the years I’ve been a member. I can see my friends pending friend requests and also how many notifications and the number of private massages they have that are unread.

It is actually still working for me. I can’t see the chat, and the red flag notifications for friend requests don’t pop up. But – if I click on the the friend requests link anyways… I can still see all the pending friend requests of other people’s profiles.

Chat is disable for me and the red flag notifications under ‘friend requests’ is not showing. However if I click on ‘friend requests’ anyways… I can still see all the pending friend requests on other people’s profiles.

This is so stupid! How could this slip through their scrawny good for nothing hands. Not only is this bad but what else bothers me about Facebook is when they change their security settings they don’t even let anyone know! So all the information you may have had private before becomes not private anymore. AND you don’t even know about it! I also heard then when your settings are not set to private Facebook can use any of the information you post on your profile or the profile of your friends. Is this true?

Don’t deactive your accounts; delete them. Deactivating means your information is still stored on Facebook’s servers.

Although knowing Facebook’s contempt for privacy I’m sure there are probably remnants left over even if you do delete the account.

There is also a bug in the iPhone facebook app that allows “blocked” people to show through. For example, poking around a friends page, I was able to see post from someone that I blocked. This was very disturbing to me. I complained a few weeks ago about it to facebook’s suggestion box. Don’t know if they fixed it. I never got a response.

It sucks! Now there is a new security bug. I was, as usual, sitting with FB and then this nice girl had sent a friend request. I was think about her boobs and… well my mind kinda wandered away a bit, I admit. Then suddenly my wife popped up from nowhere and slapped me silly. Obviously my thoughts had leaked out from FB’s profile section.

Perhaps the explanation of this is the following.

It looks like I’m among one of the few that have noticed changes that Facebook quietly implemented 5 days ago, on May 1st 2010. And they are probably testing those changes before going public.

What they did was the following. They restored the settings to allow you to limit the visibility of friends lists. You can now set it to “Everyone”, “Friends only”, “Friends of Friends” and a new option: “Custom” which you can set to “Only me”. I tested and this one, combined with the usage of “lists” has the following effect. A friend in a particular list can see your “mutual friends” in the same list only, so that the rest of your friends are hidden.

There is a caveat. A friend of your friend that is not your friend yet… can see all your friends.

It’s not working here now. I would guess FB update their central servers and the changes propagate through their cache infrastructure – which takes a while.

bit late to this but anyway. does anyone happen to know if someone could have seen my previous chats if I was set to ‘appear offline’ but still logged into FB? Also, could people only see conversations that were going on at the time they were looking, or could they see historic conversations too? I haven;t been able to find this out….it just says ‘live chats’ which suggests only ones which were happening at the time someone was spying…but I am not overly computer-literate and therefore dont know! any ideas? thanks

Is this fixed now – I assume it is?  But come be fair I have presented at numerous corporate events about bugs and security flaws in Microsoft products (although Windows 7 a lot better than Vista uuughh).  Facebook is pretty secure although of course that does not mean people cannot friend you and then work out where you live, when you on holiday etc totally legally.
