Really? Unless you’re counting Wedding, Mitte is expensive (well, relative to the rest of Berlin). Startups will find much cheaper rents and central locations in Kreuzberg or Friedrichshain. Native Instruments, for example, is based in Kreuzberg.

Or if you really want to cut costs, head to Neukölln or even the outer boroughs. There’s nothing particularly interesting going on in Mitte. It’s mostly just touristy.

True story:

Was just sitting in a packed Starbucks in Singapore a couple of hours ago. There is this white guy with an iPad sitting right in the middle of the store. So I just settled into a comfy chair and observed: The guy kept looking around self-importantly, but in the 30 mins I was there waiting for my bus, not a single person even looked at his iPad, not alone ask about it.

In this instance, at least, the device was invisible. I thought it would at least get a glance or two, but nothing. Found it very interesting, to say the least.

Now I’ve never been to Singapore, but I’m assuming a white person seems out of place there? Or perhaps it’s socially acceptable there to point out a white guy since they are uncommon? In any case pointing out the color of skin is not necessarily racist (if that’s what you were suggesting) especially considering various cultures and acceptability in those cultures. Just so happens in the US there’s lots of racism from racial mixing, so our culture associates any mention of skin color to some prejudicial intent. But consider that other cultures may not be predisposed in this way and may not have the same idea of racism as an American (assuming you are, excuse me if you aren’t). So don’t hold him to your standards (if you are)!

Here’s what I honestly don’t get, Mike Butcher: When you write the following, doesn’t a little alarm go off in your brain that says “to the rest” isn’t right; it needs to be “from the rest”? 77 % of Singapore’s population are Chinese, and since the Chinese’s color of the skin has pretty much the same color-tone as that of the typical caucasian, talking about a “white” person in Singapore makes little sense.

Why not use the the term ex-pat? Or even better: Skip the description alltogether?

i hate it when someone is describing someone else to me, but avoids the one attribute that would have helped me know who they are….their skin color or race. people are too sensitive. although, i agree with you, saying ex-pat might make sense…unless of course you’re expatriated from africa and you’re a black dude. see where it get’s confusing avoiding obvious things like skin color?

Upon inspection, the images do appear to be stuck over an original iPad ad.

1. The photo on top of the finger shows an imperfectly cut curve and a slight misalignment

2. Porn photos show inkjet printer streaks

This changes the context completely. It’s an individual artist’s creative statement against a corporate giant, not a big-budget counter-campaign sponsored by Adbusters magazine as TechCrunch reports.

The artist johannes p osterhoff should be getting more credit for this and TechCrunch should be ashamed about this lazy reporting.

It is one thing to describe someone: “Mr. Smith is the black guy in the red sweater over by the door.”

It is another thing to related an experience which has nothing to do with race and injecting it anyway: “I was sitting at the table and this Chinese guy spills beer all over me.”

The story teller could have removed the racial description from the later and it wouldn’t have impacted the point of the story at all.
