England Vs USA – It’s the TechCrunch World Cup
by Mike Butcher
on June 10, 2010

This Saturday England will play the USA in the South Africa World Cup 2010. Personally, I’m hoping England won’t be as complacent as it was in 1950.

Back then, the first World Cup saw after the Second World War saw the two teams face each other for the first time. After winning 23 of its preceding 30 games, England was feeling pretty confident. What did the Yanks know about football anyway? When the match kicked off on 29th June, the USA took the lead in the 38th minute. They won 1–0 (that’s “One Nil” BTW).

Some Americans may still be unfamiliar with this bizarre “soccer” game. But Generation Facebook And Twitter generally find themselves a lot more globally connected than those before them. And that’s to be embraced, no?

England is not doing so well right now and beset with injuries. By contrast the USA has seen recent victory over Australia. It will be a nail-biting game.

If you want to Geek Out with the World Cup we recommends the following iPhone apps:

The ESPN 2010 FIFA World Cup app [iTunes]

The South Africa 2010 Tracker which has Live updates from every match [iTunes]

iSouth Africa 2010 [iTunes]

If you’re actually going (you lucky bastard) there is South Africa Essentials [iTunes]

World Football Live [iTunes]

World Cup Factoids and History [iTunes]

World Cup Trivia Challenge Lite [iTunes]

And here are some decent sites to keep you updated:
Football365
ESPN Soccer
The Guardian World Cup Fans Network

But to give you a taster of what it would be like if the two Brits on the TechCrunch team (myself and Paul Carr) faced-off against TechCrunch’s Mike Arrington, Erick Schonfeld and MG Seigler, here’s something put together by the nice guys behind behind mloovi and learn10.

    Great Goal Mike!

Any chance you could ask your readers for help? I’m trying to make up World Cup Twitter lists for each team… the England list is pretty good but I’m struggling with some others.

    http://twitter.com/worldcup_a_to_d
    http://twitter.com/worldcup_e_to_h

I’m using the list to power a new site I’m setting up http://www.crowdfootball.com

    Cheers

  • Bailey

Why just iPhone apps? There are plenty of Android apps as well. All you have to do is search “World Cup”.

  • http://www.jollyjo.com Jollyjo

1950? Up to 2006 England was complacent! If it was up to the English…soccer would be dead…

  • http://blog.softwhere.org Rich Sharples

I’m a Brit resident in the USA for the last 9 years will be watching with a mixed crowd – should be fun.

There’s one app you missed – the Vuvuzela ! Search in App Store – there are plenty to choose from. It’s a sound you’re either going to loathe or love when the WC is all over but you will remember it.

Ha, cheers for the post Mike :) I actually made this to promote an online store at http://shop.englandstuff.com/ and you didn’t mention them! But nice to get unexpected mentions of Mloovi & Learn10 in there. So I guess I will need to self promote here ;) http://shop.englandstuff.com/techcrunch-world-cup

“England is not doing so well right now and beset with injuries. By contrast the USA has seen recent victory over Australia. It will be a nail-biting game.”

England are not ‘beset’ with injuries. One, Rio Ferdinand, a blessing in disguise.

England scored the highest number of goals in the qualifying in Europe and have won all but 1 recent games.

Australia? That powerhouse of football (soccer). Woo.

  • http://shop.englandstuff.com Mike Robinson

We also have installable widgets that countdown to the England games…http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/england-world-cup-countdown/ & http://www.widgetbox.com/widget/england-world-cup-countdown

  • Steve O’Hear

Self promotion: Where the f*** am I in the video. Everybody knows I’m a better footballer than that Paul Carr fella. Besides, 2 vs 3 isn’t very fair. Come on Engaaaaallllllaaaaaand.

  • http://shop.englandstuff.com Mike Robinson

lol, sorry Steve, I had to make some tough decisions and you didn’t quite make the cut I’m afraid, but it’s a long tournament and you may still get your chance ;)

Looks like widgets and apps are getting huge trends due to the world cup, but those who are depending on this for revenue, beware as this is a short term trend.

Steve is better in goal anyway.

  • Steve O’Hear

I guarantee I’ve attended more football matches than any of the TC crew.

I got given a free season ticket by the good people at Spurs one year (when I was a cheeky teen) cos I hassled them so much. The ground is right next to my old school.

Many years later I was a regular in the VIP box at Spurs and vowed I’d buy one one day. Yeah, that didn’t work out but…

Yeah, I thought that was a bit of an odd comment too..

  • jens

Somehow, this reminds me of jibjab.. But I think this mashup is the funniest.

  • http://www.5pm.co.uk Ronnie

One of the reasons the Yanks won was because they had a Scottish coach, William Jeffrey.

  • http://www.totalfootball2010.com Colm

+1 for Total Football 2010, really innovative, great visualisations, stats and depth – will make for a great companion app to analyse the games!

  • Willem

Must agree, Total Football 2010 app is brilliant

  • Fan 2010

    Mike,

We just launched our app that we hope could make your top list of World Cup iPhone apps.

Map.pr is the best of Foursquare plus the World Cup. Check in with your teams, let the World know where you are watching the game.

It’s our first step to adding groups to Foursquare. Sort of like hashtags for your checkin, it allows lots more info about places to bubble up.

Plus, we have a great map view of Foursquare, so if you ever wanted to see Foursquare venues on a map (with nice ranking), give it a shot. Live in iTunes now as Mappr, or at map.pr.

    Enjoy the match!
