Somehow, The Sun’s iPad app got past Apple’s ‘no porn’ rules
by Mike Butcher
on June 15, 2010

Ok, so what’s this? Porn on the iPad?! Well, not quite. The Sun newspaper is well known for retaining this throw-back tradition from the 1970s, but somehow, somehow, they’ve managed to get their infamous “Page 3 Girl” into the new iPad edition of the newspaper, despite Steve’s war on porn.

Users will be charged £4.99 for the initial app download (it comes with the first month free, iTunes link), and then a £4.99 subscription every 28 days. It’s all part of Rupert “King Canute” Murdoch’s attempt to keep the sea of free content at bay.

But despite Apple’s strict policy on nudity in iPad and iPhone apps, here is the proof that the app is uncensored (the moustache is a TechCrunch addition).

The photo of Chloe (22, from Leeds) has not been pixelated, black-boxed or censored at all.

Could it be that newspapers will escape the iPad app porn ban? This should be good news for European newspapers and magazines at least, a few of which are notoriously strewn with flesh.

Indeed, German publishers have been enthusiastically backing an iPad competitor for partly this reason. The WeTab (formerly the WePad, but we hear Apple objected to the name) won’t have any such restrictions.

Germany’s Stern, the famously risque magazine, had its iPhone app removed by Apple last November without warning due to objections over photo galleries featuring too much nakedness.

Meanwhile, here’s the uncensored version, for all you adults, or Europeans…

feck off is her name Chloe…

  • Reese

Well, her shirt was already off, so technically she didn’t Flash anybody.

  • Porn Troll

    Butcher. You’re obsessed with porn.

Thank you for taking the mantle from MJ Seigler.

Fantastic, Wouldn’t be a copy of the SUN with out it.

  • G

Sad that Tech Crunch had to censor its coverage of the Sun’s iPhone App. You yanks are like immature children when it comes to breasts. Weren’t they the first things you saw when you were born? On the sliding scale of silliness, your “coverage” of breasts is not far off from the veil or requisite covering of ankles in some countries.

  • Ben

why would anybody want to buy The Sun in the first place?

  • coco Was screwed

up, it’s free on the internet…

  • Ben H

@G: They had to censor it so that this article wouldn’t be NSFW. Most employers aren’t that cool with people reading blogs at work, let alone ones littered with tits…

I’m actually slightly disappointed the moustache was a TechCrunch addition and not a hilarious way of The Sun getting around the ban.

  • a publisher

So true, and the worst part: this is on techcrunch europe

  • CitizenCliff

Shame on TechCrunch for being a censor like Jobs. You’re just as uptight as the people you’re pointing the finger at.

  • http://twitter.com/mikebutcher Mike Butcher

    Check the post again.

  • john

I came here to see a porn pic, and all’s I got was this lousey Techcrunch moustache addition. How dare you guys stoop as low as Job’s on the censoring

  • Francesco

yep, this is techcrunch europe, why are you applying the puritans standards of US?!? Mamma mia, so sad!

  • alSeen

I appreciate not having naked women show up on my screen at work. Reading Techcrunch is well within my duties at work. Naked women are not.

  • ElGuapo

    Is boobs porn?
    you people…

  • Francesco

For our nerdy friends on the other side of the Atlantic: “topless” at the beach is allowed in almost all Europeans countries. Amen!

  • Austin Powers

Moustache jubblies! How did I miss those, baby?

  • LeeH

To line a catbox, when short of cat litter

  • nichtpresent

Yeah, The Register didn’t have to do that..

  • Bill

  • http://www.twitterbrite.com Scott Herbert

Dam expensive way of lining your cat box… at $499 a time.

  • Oflife

It’s great that Apple are finally keeping abreast of the times and allowing such titillating content to impregnate the iPad. Glad they have finally nippled that one issue in the butt!

    What?

  • Oflife

Oh alright, one more jubbly pun, “Bet she reads TechBunch.” Nah? Ok, back to work for me then.

  • Wello

So if you create a web browser app, will it be banned since there’s porn “in” it?

Why would this be considered porn? They’re breasts, not genitalia.

  • Nick

Do you also insist on not seeing naked men and complain vigorously whenever TechCrunch has a photo of a man not wearing a shirt? In this article:

    http://techcrunch.com/2008/03/06/microsoft-blews-brings-back-memories-of-rocket-pops-at-the-beach/

You can see a naked man in the background. Complain at once!

  • http://startupmeme.com Sardar Mohkim Khan

@Wello i challenge Apple that they Ban Web Apps – seriously too much nudity out there

  • http://thenerdrageblog.wordpress.com Adam

In all honesty, I wouldn’t have thought that the sort of people who buy an iPad would be the sort of people who buy the Sun.

  • acrossthapond

Great point Francesco, and when you and your buddies are done watching tits at the beach, maybe you can get back to work fixing a few things like the widespread government corruption and financial insolvency threatening to destabilize the EU. Heck, you can even watch yourself on CCTV while you do it!

Yeah, us Yanks, we got problems… :P

  • Grzegorz

Yes, the vocal (political) portion of our society is very immature when it comes to nudity. Remember the uproar over Janet Jackson’s uncovered breast? The world looked at the US and probably thought: “Are they ALL in the third grade?”

  • jenss

4.99 for a porn material? I say, just do a quick search on the images.google.com with ‘safe-search’ turned off. And you’ll be amazed how much porn you can have on the iPad.

In the end, the PORN ban on the App will hurt — the consumer not much — but obviously, the developers. Unless you’re playboy or FHM.

Oh well, that’s why Android has Mikandi :D

  • Steve

So porn is now defined as simply being naked? What if the model was less attractive? Would it still be pornographic because she’s showing her breasts even if no one cared to look?

I thought porn involved pictures of people doing something salacious like fondling genitalia for erotic effect or something like that. I thought it involved lewd or lascivious behavior.

Since when is simply being naked considered pornographic? I wonder if God is crying over how ashamed Americans are of the human body and its beautiful form that He created.

Does this mean that all nude beaches and nude parks are filled with porn stars? Because I thought nudists just liked not being confined by clothing and enjoying living in a more natural state of being.

Besides where are the people who believe in the First Amendment of the Bill of Rights? Does anyone believe in the right of Americans to decide for themselves what content they wish to read, see, or hear? Or should that responsibility now go to Apple to decide for all of us lewd, lascivious, porn-seeking heathens of America?

I agree with Grzegorz’s comment, “Grow up, America!” and I extend that further by saying, “Apple, get a life and a grip on reality!” No wonder so many Americans are ashamed of their bodies and have poor body image living in a society where we are actively taught by technology and political policy to hide, cover up, and be ashamed of what God gave us.

Not surprising that Jobs turned a blind eye to this. Murdoch’s his new best buddy, and of course he can relax the rules a little for a friend as powerful as Rupert Murdoch. In fact they’re getting along famously of late – Rupert even hailed Steve as “the best CEO in America”.

There’s a clear business reason for this rather nauseating buddying up, of course – Murdoch clearly sees the iPad as an enticing, glossy paywalled-garden for his content.

And I suspect this is the way that he and other publishers are finally hoping to monetize on their digital content. The User Experience of the iPad is sufficiently refined that, in the same way that people will happily pay more for an iPhone because the UX is superior to any other phone, the iPad will attract enough people willing to pay a few bucks to download a digital magazine rather than suffer the degraded experience of reading webpages online for free.

The only problem with this app is that after looking at the pictures (because there aren’t really any articles, it’s target audience is semi-illiterate) you won’t be able to use it to wrap up your fish n’ chips!

Makes me proud to be a European !

  • http://makeplaylearn.com acz

The Sun is bin-liner bought by respectable-looking men who want to be able to oogle naked breasts on the tube while commuting. Other than Page 3, there’s nothing in it. That being said, Page 3 is sorta funny, and rather harmless.

  • Francesco

Come one, acrossthapond, tale it easy. US is a great country most of Europeans look at with great admiration and respect. Of course we have many problems in Europe, the ones you mention and some more.

However, topless at the beach means freedom for women, and this is a European great point of pride. You should agree on that.

    Cheers!

  • Peter

I am looking forward to the Daily Sport app.

Hey everyone, I found this link for nudism. It is a new to look at many diverse kinds of nude teenagers, kids, parents that are living their lives within a nudist society. Can anyone let me know if indeed its a great cite to go too or not. I believe it was solid because none of the torrent cites have anything like this.
