Rakuten to acquire France’s PriceMinister for approximately €200 million

Japanese e-commerce giant Rakuten this morning announced that it is buying France’s e-commerce website operator PriceMinister for about €200 million, reports the Wall Street Journal.

The news comes less than a month after word got out that Rakuten moved to acquire US-based Buy.com for approx. the same price ($250M).

Rakuten said it will buy the entire stake in PriceMinister, which boasts some 12 million registered members, from the existing issueholders through its unit in Luxemburg. The transaction is expected to close in July.

Aside from its acquisitions of Buy.com and now PriceMinister, Rakuten is also aggressively expanding across the globe through online mall operation partnerships, including a $50 million deal it recently signed with Chinese search engine Baidu and one it has established with Indonesian media conglomerate PT Global Mediacom – Rakuten and Global Mediacom are poised to launch a local e-commerce network through a joint-venture in the second half of 2010.

    Another great success-story for venture-backed ecommerce start-ups in Europe and in France in particular. Well done to the team! My take is that we will see more and more buyers coming to Europe from Asia, competing with eBay, Amazon, GSI, etc. to grow global Internet ecommerce franchises. Now what we need is more international ambition from the large European retail and etail groups so that we move from local champions to global franchises. Hopefully Vente-Privee will get there, as a stand-alone public company at some point. PPR’s investment in myFab is a good move but we need to see some bolder moves from the European players. Nevertheless I believe that we have some exciting years ahead of us in the ecommerce space with more M&A and more innovative start-ups like Vente-prive and myFab scaling fast and creating differentiated champions.

    Bonjour,

    Encore une société française qui part à l’étranger .. Il y a 10 ans, c’était Ibazar racheté par le groupe eBay et maintenant au tour de Priceminister qui part au pays du soleil levant.

    On n’est incapable en France de garder nos sociétés.
