Is Flattr the new Facebook Like, but this time with real money?
by Mike Butcher
on July 6, 2010

Flattr is a new startup with an inovative business model, coming out of Sweden. In fact it’s the brainchild of a group of people formerly associated with The [infamous] Pirate Bay, including Peter Sunde Kolmisoppi. It’s highly ironic that Flattr has sprung from a similar group that refused to pay for content, like movies. But Flattr just might work because there are already signs that the micropayments startup is getting grass-roots traction – and it’s still only in closed beta. Flattr is reminiscent of Digg or perhaps Facebook Like buttons – but this time with real money. That could make things very interesting.

According to one blogger he has had €875.89 for the month of June from Flattr and the amount has increased steadily upwards. Plus Flattr (as in flattering someone and a flat-rate payment model) is already in use by two major German newspapers, completely unprompted: taz.de and Freitag.de

There are also lists appearing of people appearing who are starting to make actual money. Admittedly these are small amounts, but that fact it’s even happening is interesting. Flattr has competition in the form of Kachingle but it’s fair to say the latter is not getting quite the same amount of buzz.

So how does it work?

The trouble with micropayments to date, say via Paypal, is that the threshold for donating to a site is high, and sending just a small sum like €0.01 is tedious. So every user that sets up a Flattr account pays a monthly fee — a minimum €2 — that they are willing to contribute for any kind of online content. When the user finds something they like that has a Flattr button, they can click the button to “reward” the content provider.

At the end of the month, the user’s monthly fee (remember this could be as low as €2) is split equally among the holders of the content that they “flattered”. Remember, clicking one more button doesn’t add to your monthly Flattr fee, it just divides the fee up equally. Of course, there needs to be enough content creators willing to include Flattr buttons on their sites and enough Flattr users (the service is currently in beta and an invite is required to set up an account).

Flattr’s system encourages participation, since in order to get money you also need to offer it as a button. Plus, before you can get flattred you need to funds to your account – so you have to pay into the system to get something out. If you empty your account the flattr payments stop happening. And if you do flattr nothing in a month your budget goes to charity.

Flattr can be used as a compliment to donations or advertising or even for getting small donations for open source software. Third-party applications are now starting to spring up around Flattr including ImFlattrd (social network) and a Firefox add-on (to flattr any content).

Imagine a world where journalists are paid according to how many flattrs they attract? It may still happen…

Excellent!! So when can I flattr TCEurope posts? ;) (Disclosure: https://flattr.com/profile/eileentso)

  • Wello

Removing the vowel after the R is getting kinda.. old.

  • http://www.vccafe.com VC Cafe

Interesting that Flattr was started to help people share money, not only content.

Also interesting to see if the micro payments would work, given the London Times decision to go with a simple £2 flat fee to access content after lots of research.

Personally, I think that it’s a nice idea, but will it work?

  • John

Why would i be inclined to pay money for a service that i’m already getting for free? I see small pockets of people using this, not widespread mass use whatsoever. There’s not enough people out there that sentimental they’d want to offer money to a publisher if they didn’t have to.

  • Nick

Do I understand correctly that this fully relies on the charity of users to donate each month 2 pounds or more for the content they view? I.e. there is no other benefit to those users than rewarding content providers? Or is a Flattr membership and minimum donation required to view certain content? Still like the idea. Cheers

    Nick

  • http://www.imafish.co.uk Pete White

As a user I’m not sure if I would be willing to pay for something I would get for free however I’ve often wanted to pay my gratitude for something I’ve found useful – perhaps it takes a small change in thinking.

Defo be interested in checking this out for my blog. Would be happy to report back any earnings.

  • Cody

Flattr looks interesting, I’d love to try it out!

  • caren

Interested to see if this will catch hold in the US. One question…will we be able to pre-determine what charity the money will go to at the end of the month?

  • http://www.ling.pl pundit

sounds really cool! this actually MAY change the picture… People will click, the only problem is to persuade them to spend these 2 pounds per month (still something). BTW, I’d love to get one of the invitations ;)

I was with you until this bit:

“Plus, before you can get flattred you need to funds to your account – so you have to pay into the system to get something out. If you empty your account the flattr payments stop happening.”

If I’m a content producer, why do I have to fund my account? Shouldn’t I just be receiving checks?

It will be interesting to see if this gets much traction. I could see this being beneficial to start-up software companies that are initially offering their software for free use to provide them some sort of income (even if miniscule!). Also, interesting to think about the tax problems with this, as a simple transfer from individual to individual couldn’t be taxed, but if many corporations set up Flattr accounts they will record it as an expense and the income will currently unlikely be taxed.

Sounds like a great idea nevertheless, I can’t wait to sign up!

  • Kenan Saatcioglu

Interesting, can you send me an invite?

  • Jayton

“Imagine a world where journalists are paid according to how many flattrs they attract?”

Think how much better of a world we’d live in if everyone was paid according to the actual quality of their work. People would strive for some amazing things and push their brains beyond their capabilities.

    Invite please! Sound really interesting.

I wonder though, what is the incentive for people to join, besides appealing to their sense of good will (i.e. their desire to reward people / media / things they enjoy)?

The success of the site could potentially be bolstered by access partnerships with premium content providers (“funny or die” is an example that comes to mind, or music sites) to lure in members.

id love for this to work….in a world where lots of people have more money than time…this is innovative….i could see NGOs using this approach well…people putting $50/month to charity..and based on their whims due jour..funds getting pushed out to those organizations doing most good that month..

  • http://chunkydesign.wordpress.com/ Vitor Dengucho

It looks a nice concept and idea. Let´s see how it works in the future. As it is now, we see more and more people giving away content (music, for example), because there´s no way of stoping it from being shared, and trying to find other ways to make profit out of their work. This could be one of the options…

  • http://www.imkon.com Sena Gbeckor-Kove

Intriguing, I wonder how well it will do once the floodgates are open?

  • http://davemmett.com Dave

It’s an interesting concept. I wonder if this concept could work with something like Instapaper; I pay in $5 or whatever every month and when I add an article to read later, a share of that goes to the author. I just think Flattr is going to need to provide some value to users in order to get them to actually start subscribing (and Instapaper does this by giving us a great reading environment for posts).

  • matt

I think especially those collecting societies in Europe should look into something like this. Makes way more sense than the discussed media flat-rates which tend to favor the big guys again.

Also, I’d like an invite please!

  • http://www.thewayoftheweb.net Dan Thornton

I’d be really interested in testing this – I seem to remember Tipjoy and others trying similar stuff in the past, but the flat monthly fee might make it more viable as it’s so much easier – plus attitudes are definitely starting to change…

  • Steve O’Hear

    That’s a terrible idea :)

  • http://twitter.com/jussir JussiR

The minimum fee is 2€ a month. Is that really too much for you to pay? The idea is simply to get everyone involved and to spread the idea that you need to give to be able to receive.

  • DanCast

No mention of Flattr raking the donations, so where does their cut come in? Advertising? Investing what’s in the pot?

  • http://www.LowPriceLessons.com Jamie Curran

Removing it BEFORE the R is even worse…

  • Joan

Can’t Techcrunch put up a flattr button to this article so that i may flattr it?

  • http://twitter.com/jussir JussiR

I don’t think there’s anything contradictory in Pirate Bay guys making Flattr. In fact, i think it makes perfect sense. The idea is not to kill revenue from content producers, but to kill unefficient copyright laws, and force producers to find new ways of getting revenue. And Flattr would definitely be an ideal way of doing that.

Great idea! I often thought that a system such as this could work for music and film as well. It would allow independent artists gain revenue from their work and tie revenue directly back to the content producers. The challenge for applying it to film and music is the tangled web of laws, licenses, and contracts that would have to be navigated.

I like the idea. the problem still seems to be that people can still enjoy the content without contributing. I’d love to see this become a phenomenon. A long-living one.

  • http://great-hikes.com/blog Andy

Flat fees might work for large publisher with a reputation, but voluntary micropayments seem to be the way to go for personal blogs.

In an ideal world, the ISP would replace flattr: collect the (mandatory) fee and resitribute it to all websites that you visit. After all, the ISPs seems to be the only ones in the chain that you pay real money (as opposed to adverts) to serve content to you–and they get all their content for free.

In the meantime, I’d love to try out flattr.

  • http://navidate.com Deano

I actually had a similar idea, essentially around tipping torrented stuff based on how much you like the overall show, or even a given cast/crew member. That way, you could give a $1 to your Transformers 2 download just to Megan Fox, to make sure Michael Bay knows how you feel on the TvR scale… Waaaay complicated, though.

Love the simplicity of the flattr model, but unsure of how well it works based on a $2-5/month per user pay scheme… Still, promising enough I might have to steal that model for my dating site. ;)

  • wangston

I used tipjoy for a few projects and found the general idea fantastic… Sounds like flattr solves both the problem of people not tipping because they would have to then eventually pay into a service they didn’t yet use (since you have to deposit money to use flattr) and the collections problem at the end of the month where a large portion of the tips went unpaid.

I look forward to giving it a try.

If content sites would request their visitors to have a flattr account to see the content – not to contribute, just to have an account so they have the chance to contribute if they want to- it could work. But it’d be a bold move from the publisher until flattr gets mainstream.

Great idea. If users aren’t willing to pay for subscription-based content online, then at least this is a secondary way to make income from good content. Check that, great content because the other users are also in the network so you can assume they are also content creators and will judge you at a higher level. Let the flattring begin.

Wouldn’t ever think that the micro-transaction idea would work because the work required to do it was always more than the worth of the donation, but pre-registering an account to use around the web to bump people is a good idea… no idea if it will scale, I can’t think of that many web properties I want to shower in change right now.

Its not the amount, it just makes the whole idea (which I like otherwise) sound like a scam.

This model could ‘save’ online publications if used properly… I did some research on this some time ago, and there was a forerunner, kachingle, which pioneered this concept.

  • http://phonefromhere.com Tim Panton

“It’s highly ironic that Flattr has sprung from a similar group that refused to pay for content, like movies. ”

I don’t think that the guys from The Pirate Bay don’t want to pay for content, they just want people to realize that the industry has to evolve, that paying a lot of money for a CD is just not working anymore.

I’d be happy to reward my favourite artists for their work, but I am not ready to buy an expensive CD, which is gonna collect dust on a shelf after I copied it into my PC.
That’s where Flattr comes in. Small amounts of money, really easy to use, and it can be used by everybody (bloggers, software contributors, artists, …)

I really wish Flattr to continue to grow and to show the way! Now all I miss is an account… ;)

  • http://specle.net Tom Beckenham

I think this is actually a really interesting idea, and could definitely work.

The psychology of it will be very interesting.

What’s beautiful about it is that after the user is convinced to pay their monthly fee, they will want to make use of it. It will attract those users to sites that have flattr buttons. Like a per-per-month phone contract. You know you’re paying £20 per month, so you’re going to want to use all your minutes. Unlike a phone contract though, your fee is capped, so the user will be even more likely to click flattr buttons.

For the doubters, it shouldn’t be difficult to get users to fork out for something they are currently getting for nothing. There would be many, many ways to incentivise people to subscribe – discounts, exclusive memberships, free offers, all sorts of stuff.

An interesting one to explore would be to give you virtual / game currency of an equivalent amount you spend per month… then of course add a flattr button to that games page. Imagine if Zynga got a hold of this.

Other options like offering an instapaper like service with it would also work well.

    Great idea Flattr team.

I think the innovative bit is getting users to commit to a fixed budget. That ensures that money will flow through the system, and content producers will be invented to chase that revenue stream.

Hey google, this would be awesome for youtube. We might see more small semi-professional projects earning money there, raising the overall quality.

I like the idea that by contributing small amounts to websites / authors / content creators I like I can make sure that there will be more content that I like on the web.

The only downside I see is that there will be people trying to fish for flattr money with stuff other people created. It will depend on the smarts of flattr users to contribute to people who create, not those who only copy.

Right now, we publish and distribute ebooks in a dime-novel format (bi-weekly publication, $.99/each). We are pushing through iBookstore, Kindle, and various other channels. Although we are currently exploring subscription-based models as well, Flattr could be another avenue for us to explore content monetization.

I already turn off adblock for all the sites I actually care about (slashdot.org, techcrunch, reddit, etc.) but I would love to be able to be like “hey this site really does a lot for me and I would love to make a small donation.”

Also I think it would be great if maybe all the users that flattr an site could get a little icon or badge added to their username or even a different color (like flattrs orange or green). The possibilities are simply endless

I’m looking at ways of funding a community biology lab I am aiming to start up soon, which will focus on education and outreach on the subjects of Genetics and Synthetic Biology. Also to perform research in both fields, and to publicise/Open Source said research online.
The big barrier to this is, unless I sell out to a VC, I don’t know how I’m going to fund it all! Flattr could be really excellent if it gains enough critical mass, and for my web-oriented sharing it would be a great incentive.

    Go flattr!

[...] At least one article I have read seems to think it will, going so far as to liken the Flattr button …. They say “Is Flattr the new Facebook Like, this time with real money?” and there in lies the problem… money. People are notoriously unwilling to pay for content online… at least webcomic content. While this idea is less like a true micropayment, where what the reader wants to see is locked behind a subscription wall it’s still similar in that you are asking your readers for money. The key to making this sort of thing work is to make it as simple and as transparent as possible. The Flattr button is like that candy bar in the check out line at the supermarket, it is an impulse to click it. If there are 12 layers to get through to actually give money, then that is 12 chances for the reader to back out of the transaction. So that is step 1, make it as simple as the Facebook like button, one click and you “like” something, and the case of Flattr you liked it so much you gave them money. [...]

Women really like the stylish and modern handbag. Many of them prefer the design than the quality of the material. If you choose durable handbag, you will benefit
because durable bag will last long. Many bags models that become trends and sometimes women are chasing the bag to follow the latest trends.
In addition, many well-known handbag brands that offers a large collection of handbags. You can choose a bag with a wide selection of material. There are bags that
made from cloth, leather and patent leather. Every material has a different price because the use of appropriate materials will increase your comfort when carrying the
    bag.
Leather material offers a beautiful appearance while the patent leather will give the luxury and shiny impression. Patent leather has the most expensive price because
it is made using a special process that makes leather look shiny and waterproof. Waterproof bag is going to last long because the interior of the bag will not get wet.
Color selection is also important because it determines the harmony between the bags with your clothes. Neutral colors like black and white will match any outfit. The
advantage of the black bag is that they always look like new even though there was dirt and dust. White bag will make you give extra attention because the white color
will look dirty if there is a little stain.
After selecting the correct material, you should pay attention to other parts like the strap, zipper and stitching. Make sure that the zipper has a good quality. You
