The Social Network: second trailer for the Facebook movie hits the web
by Robin Wauters
on July 8, 2010

A couple of weeks ago, the first trailer for the upcoming Facebook movie, The Social Network, hit the Web. Well lo and behold, a couple of hours ago the second trailer was released (embedded below). Remember, you saw it here first ;)

The apocalyptic score remains, and the audio cuts from the movie you hear in the teaser are largely the same as in the first trailer, but this time conversations are played out like a chronological run-down of a Facebook news feed.

Best quote comes at the end: “You better lawyer up ’cause I’m coming back for everything.”

(thanks for the tip, Sean!)

Featured in the trailer are:

- Mark Zuckerberg (Facebook co-founder and CEO)

- Eduardo Saverin (co-founded Facebook during his last year of the Economics study at Harvard University. His departure from Facebook was the subject of subsequent legal action. He later won the right to have his name listed among the other founders in a lawsuit.)

- Dustin Moskovitz (co-founder of Facebook – left the company in October 2008)

- Marilyn Delpy (no idea who this is)

- Erica Albright (no idea who this is, but according to the screenplay a girl Zuckerberg was dating a couple of years ago)

- Divya Narendra (started ConnectU, the social network that sparked the idea for Facebook, with Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss. ConnectU ended up suing Facebook for stealing the idea and using some of their source code.)

- Christy Lee (no idea who this is)

- Tyler Winklevoss (Together with his twin brother Cameron and Narendra, owns ConnectU, previously HarvardConnection. In 2004, ConnectU filed a lawsuit against Facebook alleging that Zuckerberg had broken an oral contract with them. The parties reached a confidential settlement agreement in February, 2008.)

- Larry Summers (no idea who this is – update: ah Lawrence Summers, former President of Harvard University – thanks, commenter Greg!)

- Sean Parker (In 2004, Parker began informally advising the creators of Facebook, and became its President when the company incorporated that same year. In 2006, Parker joined the Founders Fund, a venture capital fund based in San Francisco, as Managing Partner.)

- Cameron Winklevoss (see above)

For those not in the know, The Social Network is a Columbia Pictures film based on Ben Mezrich’s book “The Accidental Billionaires, A Tale of Sex, Money, Genius and Betrayal,” a story about the founding of Facebook. It hits theaters in October 2010.

Currently enjoying “The Facebook Effect” book and can’t wait to see the movie. I imagine the movie as a John Grisham law movie 2.0 – plus parties, geeks, serious “Harvardism” and some heroic, Braveheart-alike speeches by Mark Zuckerberg held with a pirate sword. Cool!

I know the Facebook application developer who’s been asked by Sony to build a Facebook application for the movie :-)

    1. This trailer is exactly the same as the first, but with scrolling status updates instead of no image at all and purely audio.

    2. This movie will be a disaster. Noone cares about the origin of Facebook.

    3. People still using Facebook are one of the following:
    i. Non-tech internet public
ii. People who don’t understand Twitter yet
    iii. Idiots
iv. Just random nobodies talking crap
    v. Young girls with no brains
    vi. Douchebags

Facebook is no longer cool except among morons. They constantly try and implement Twitter-style approaches and make themselves look pathetic.

But heh, at the end of the day, Twitter is pretty awful aswell.

I am wondering when’ll the real trailer come, where there are real actors doing something. Both the trailers do not look like real trailers, just home made YouTube videos :)

I’m always interested in the origins of companies (sucessful or not). The problem with movies based on real events though is that they always take a certain amount of artistic license. Should be a good movie.

Dunno why this was posted in TC Europe though…

I am very happy with the casting for this movie. Jesse Eisenberg looks a lot like Mark Zuckerberg. Justin Timberlake is a good fit for the Sean Parker character.

The Accidental Billionaires is a fantastic book – I couldn’t put it down. I had no idea how dramatic the founding of Facebook was until I read it. I hope the movie is as compelling as the book!

Actually there is an alternative to facebook coming this September. It’s called somethingcoolhappened.com. You can go there now to view a preview video and to preregister. With this site you can interact with friends, create your own unique avatars, upload videos, pictures or stories of something cool that happened to you or someone else! It is going to be awesome! I do not understand the appeal of Facebook. What exactly does it offer? Oh ya, I can look at and comment on my friends pictures and play stupid online games. Facebook completely boring.

    Twitter is even more boring.

75% of the websites profiles here are either boring and/or idiotic.

Just because something is presented via the web does not make it interesting or useful.

it sounds a bit like a biography book, is it all going to be true or will they do some crazy stuff that isn’t to make it interesting ? – I could imagine some fun movie comedies based on social networking – maybe the cast of friends couldn’t do a movie where they meet up again via facebook or something with Jim Cary or someone funny in it ?

I’m not sure this movie will be successful – but am i pretty sure that you are an idiot.

Also, whatever your irrelevant list says, hundreds of millions of people are using facebook (DUH?) it’s also pretty irrelevant if facebook is cool or not – since when is that the defining factor for everything? Do WalMart lose sleep over whether they are cool?

  • Harry

I find football boring. However, i’ve used a small amount of brain horse power to work out that other people can find lots of fun and interest in it, and subsequently find it very appealing. Somehow this wasn’t a huge mental leap for me and the fact that it is the most popular sport in the world causes me no intellectual trouble.

The Social Network sometimes relegates the actual effects of Facebook to
passing lines of dialogue and offhand references. But there’s plenty to
explore in its causes, and Zuckerberg’s story ends up feeling bigger
    than his own life.
