Spain owns the social media conversation, Holland the positive sentiment #worldcup

Social CRM platform vendor Attensity has issued its analysis of the sentiment expressed throughout various social media platforms about the World Cup finalists. Based on data drawn from the likes of Facebook, Twitter, blogs, video and forum sites, the startup has concluded that while Spain owns the largest share of conversations across the Web, social media users speak slightly more positive of The Netherlands.

According to Attensity, 54 percent of the total conversation about the World Cup (by English speakers) is being directed toward Spain, yet, of that total amount, only 47 percent of the chatter has been positive in sentiment. While only garnering 46 percent of the total conversation, Holland, on the other hand, has seen greater positive sentiment (53 percent).

But, you ask, what does it all mean? Nothing really, but La Roja better win that damn World Cup since I bet hard-earned money on them doing so before the tournament started.

Who do you favor?

    Which has the better beer?

  • http://techcrunch.com Robin Wauters

    Belgium :)

  • Liz

I know Hispanic Americans and folks in South America who are supporting Spain so that is a much larger group of people to draw on that supporters of the Netherlands, at least in the U.S.

We got Heineken!! we are also with a lot less people in the world maybe 17 milion so with these percentages WE @#$ ROCK!! and will win the World Cup.

    cheers

  • Marley

Good point, but you discount all the lovers of Mary Jane, like me, who are rooting for the Netherlands.

  • Bob

Yeah, but if you count all those guys in their 30s who’re still getting high on weed, then Netherlands would have a much larger group of supporters.

  • David

Spain of course. Even Paul the Octopus predicted they will win

  • Bob
  • Jimbo

Ever tried Shandy CruzCampo? Had some last night with some steaks and it blew every Belgium beer out of the water ;)

  • Roman

Why? Apart from the language they don’T have very much in common!

  • Oletros

Shandy? My God, is not beer, it’s beer+lemon (a summer beverage called “clara” here in Spain) and is almost the worst kind of beer you can take in Spain.

the octopus is german and we don’t have octopussies in holland only clams :)

  • MaraMara

We used to own New York, you know
Both teams make a good chance, that’s all
I think this match will be unpredictable

  • Victor van Zuydewijn

That octupus was threathend he would end up in Paella or as a tapas if he didn’t choose Spain.

We will win. We will get that star on our jersey’s! WE WILL WIN!!!

The real winner of the worldcup is @the_vuvuzela

  • Sergio

Hey, measuring sentiment conversation in English speakers?

I guess that means that nor the Spanish speakers or Dutch speakers out there are included…..

I only can say that I hope this time Paul doesn’t fail, he failed the EuroCup prediction….

  • http://Www.clasili.com Teresa

    That’s not what i read here: http://www.clasili.com

these guys mathematically predicted the winners

  • Angela

No offense, but i think you’re interpreting that data incorrectly. The positivity or negativity of overall chatter for one team or the other would come out of the chatter percentage for that team. so you can’t just conclude that the Netherlands have a higher positivity percentage (at least not with the numbers you’ve presented here). sorry dude, but you don’t have your facts straight.

I favored the germans, cause they showed the best offensive football that world cup. But the best organised team with the most precision in their passplay will win – and that is spain indeed.

The octopus said it’d be Spain.

    Hi there!

I’m the author of the original article on the Attensity blog. I just wanted to make a really quick comment re: methodology.

    1. I looked at the overall volume of the conversations around both teams, and got share of voice from that. 54% of all these conversations were about Spain.
    2. Of ALL the conversations in (1), I looked at just positive, just negative, just mixed and just neutral. Then of all the positive, I calculated the % of the whole that was owned by Spain. So if we had 50k convos total, and 20k were positive – what % of the total positive (20k) were about Spain (47%), and what % were about Netherlands (53%).

So when you see the 53% stat, it’s actually % of all positive conversations, not % of conversations about Netherlands.

The reason I did it this way because it equalizes things, and you are comparing apples to apples.

    If not clear, ping me!

Spain is more popular than Holland&Netherlands in total on twitter.

  • http://gregdoesit.com Gergely Orosz

It’ll also be interesting to see which teams will be more popular _during_ the game: http://tweetforyourteam.com/

  • vincent

Holland always plays best at the strongest competitors and awfull when they supposed to have an easy win. NL will win jaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

  • Alex

The reason Spain is more popular on Twitter is because anyone who has time for Twitter usually unemployed. Looking at Spain’s unemployment rate of 19%, it is easy to conclude that they are more popular on Twitter. Also taking the demographics from each country meaning Spain has a greater population and overall a younger average age that are more technology savvy. Therefore your statement is inconclusive!
