Hipster is location-based Q&A – call it Quora for where you are
by Mike Butcher
on January 18, 2011

Suddenly people are talking about Hipster.

Ok, let’s clarify that. A group of tech enthusiasts in San Francisco are talking about what Hipster might actually be, since Hipster CEO Doug Ludlow has so far refused to say what Hipster is about. And it’s producing what appears to be a case study in viral marketing.

Luckily, all this talk is producing answers and sure enough TechCrunch readers have come up with the answers in our comments.

For Hipster appears to be a Q&A site built around your current location. Let’s call it a ‘Quora for location.’ And it even looks like Quora. Check out the below screen grab from Google cache.

But more interesting is that this business already exists in the form of Loqly, a mashup of Google-powered search, local experts and real time answers. See the video below.

Indeed, even the venerable Ask.com has an iphone app based on location.

Interesting. Sadly apps like this will only be useful to those in big cities.

Doesn’t look like it’ll be that impressive. It doesn’t help that they called the app “Hipster”, either.

I’m personally too worried about Hipster having this much competition, I’d be more worried for Ask.com- The best marketer will be the victor, in my humble opinion.

Bullshit reporting. Location based Q&A… Get over your cliched reporting TC. It sounds shit when you start dancing like a peacock in front of Quora.

How will this effect Techcrunch’s investment in Quora?

yeah.. the naming around the brand is all wrong.

Will the emos, hip hops, jesus lovers, mainstream, alt, blipster, relate to a hipster brand for local Q &A? I don’t think so. It’s such a heavily loaded term. I guess we’ll have to wait and see.

“Suddenly people are talking about Hipster…Ok, let’s clarify that. A group of tech enthusiasts in San Francisco are talking about what Hipster might actually be…”

No, lets clarify further. Only Techcrunch is talking about Hipster. And I can see it coming – MC Siegler weighing in with “Hipster is Cool and You Should Like It” article, Alexia doing a “Hipster is, Like, Hip” article, some “guest writer” doing a 10,000 word advertorial on it, then as the Techcrunch hype machine mounts the inevitable “Wow Hipster is really exploding!” articles.

Man, I am really not looking forward to this.

  • http://www.w2lessons.com Michael Woloszynowicz

Seems like this trend is becoming a good business strategy. Find existing businesses that are successful and not too complex and add location awareness, build a minimum viable product, and then do an invite only beta launch to build buzz. If it doesn’t work then rinse and repeat.

  • http://twitter.com/nishantpant nishantpant

Ha! I would blame that on the annoying spelling corrector on the iPhone..keeps changing my words all the time. But I checked http://loqly.me. That looks like a true hybrid of Yelp + Quora + Ask.

The most amazing comment ever. Hipster probably will explode (perhaps BECAUSE of TechCrunch advertising it), but the trend TechCrunch follows with every one of these small startups that over a year grow to be a little less small (or sometimes huge) is hillariously predictable: Twitter, Quora, Zynga, Spotify, Groupon, Soluto, UJam, and more.

If Hipster gets closer to the size of the first 5 companies I mentioned, there will also inevitably be posts on “What Makes Hipster Different/Better than Loqly and Others?” and “A Different Take on Hipster: Why it Will Fail” (probably by Schonfeld or however you spell it).

Jokes aside though, Q&A is still hot and Local is the next logical step for Q&A services. It’s not surprising that Hipster is doing something Loqly was already doing. Over the next year, there will probably be several more local Q&As popping up. The real threat will come when existing Q&As that already have large user bases (like Quora) start doing Local. They could crush Hipster and Loqly before they even get off the ground.

I’m sorry, but when a company won’t tell you what their product or service does… it doesn’t entice me to want to use their product. Using secrecy to hype a product only works if your CEO is named Steve Jobs.

  • Andrea

No one ever complains about having too many Fast food restaurants in U.S. Why do you then complain about too many Q&A sites. Competition is healthy…the good ones win in the end. Whatever it is, these entrepreneurs should be respected no ridiculed for at least trying something knowing that they can fail.

    Hypester.

  • Billy M.

Another interesting thing I noticed in the Loqly video is that they are focused on questions about businesses. You choose a business first and then ask your question. I really like this because this over time will end up accumulating F.A.Q for all businesses around you. Whereas, hipster just allows you ask an open ended question like quora/vark. i.e the questions have no other context other than your geolocation.

    1. Can someone please tell me which tech enthusiasts are talking about it, so that I can get them to talk about a couple of other startups, seems like a good strategy :-)
