Twitter starts hiring sales people in London – but remains coy about Euro HQ
by Mike Butcher
on February 24, 2011

There’s been a lot of speculation in recent months about where Twitter would put down a European base in its efforts to expand its operation. Certainly I’ve been bugging them in the last few weeks about whether they would come to London. But now we have the answer: London it is – at least for five people whose jobs will be largely about sales and commercial partnerships.

And they are an Account Executive, Account Manager, Inside Sales Account Executive, Partner Manager and a Partnership Program Manager.

But dare we call it a “European HQ” yet? Well, Twitter’s head of International expansion Katie Jacobs Stanton says “Note: location of our Euro HQ is still TBD”.

So for now I guess we can only call it a sales office.

Having said that, London is a natural for a European HQ and Twitter would be in good company, with Google and Microsoft retaining big presences in the city. In addition, by being in London, not only will it be able to access the sizeable advertising agency sector, but Twitter would also be close to the centres of talent it may well consider hiring from, as we’ve argued in the past.

But the jury is still out – since Dublin is also a strong contender, holding the European HQs for Google, Linkedin, and Facebook, though largely for the low corporation tax there.

Don’t open office in London,is one of the more stressful city in Europe,Dublin is much better and of course corporation tax more lower.

What about Zurich? As mentioned Google’s Zurich office is by far larger than the one in London..

Forget about Dublin or London. Cork is where they should locate!!! Seriously, the tax rate issue is misleading. When do you think Twitter is going to make a profit!! A good 5 years plus. While it will need some presence in the majour cities, an Irish base would be great for staff, tech (think Amazon AWS) and backoffice. That said, the lack of a direct air link between Dublin and the west coast might be an issue. Also, the IDA’s eye is off the ball now because of the General Election.

Zurich sucks. When people open their mouths, you begin to realize they all suffer from a horrible throat condition… Somebody develop a medicine for that, please.

My guess is, they will set up shop in Rolle, Switzerland. Nice tax incentives, beautiful countryside, stable country, great quality of life.

Dublin also has all major advertising agents, highly skilled workforce, good transport, cheap high spec housing, convention centres, in 2005 the economist intellegence unit ranked Ireland no.1 for quality of life compared to UK @29. Times have changed in Ireland but largely for the better for an inward investing multinational. But of course it’s all about the tax rate. Have you ever been to Dublin Mr.Butcher?

  • http://twitter.com/mikebutcher Mike Butcher

    Yes. Many times.

may be missing biggest point which is tax. May have a large office in UK but have central management in Switzerland or Lux for tax reasons.

London? Dublin? Pshaw!! If you want great living, low taxes, workforce superior to that of England or Ireland, you’ve got to open your office in Warsaw or Prague.

Saying it’ll be in “London” isn’t very useful considering the size of it.

For starters, they could go somewhere in zone 6 which would be a fair old slog outside of the city. However even if you consider it to (more realistically) be zone 1 or 2, that could still mean a commute of 40-50 minutes if you happen to live on the other side of the city.

As an example, commuting from Richmond to Farringdon (where last.fm are) would take you 56 minutes whereas commuting from Richmond to Victoria (where Google are) would only take you 26 minutes.

European HQ (ie for tax purposes, perhaps data protection), does not have to be the sales hub – is unlikely to be.

Multinational tech companies don’t locate in Ireland due to low corporate tax rates. If that were the case then every company would have a brassplate headquarters in Zug in Switzerland (admittedly there are loads there!) Google just bought another building beside their existing one for $100M last week and are supposedly planning on developing another 2 larger ones in the same area. I don’t think they need that many accountants to tot up cash for the low tax rate.

Instead they locate in Ireland because actual work can be done in Ireland with the highly educated workforce etc. etc. but also because Ireland’s relatively straightforward corporate tax system allows for profits from other countries to be repatriated to Ireland. Other countries in the EU have much more complex tax systems which hamstring companies out of certain types of activities but also allow much more creative accounting to take place. Take France for example with it’s 33.3% headline corporate tax rate, but 1/3 of French companies paid 0% last year.

Seriously, I’m actually not bothered. It makes sense from a sales perspective but in practice I think they will do what Google and Facebook do – one in Dublin one in London.

“though largely for the low corporation tax there.”

Yes, but also the well educated, hard-working, English speaking workforce. Please don’t make patronising assumptions.

  • http://keepfakingit.com/ cian

@Ciara, @D Malone, get over the nationalistic hubris. That ended in September 2008. Google, Facebook, Intel, HP, Apple etc. None would be in Ireland to the extent they are without low corporation tax. And if I’m Twitter and I read Vanity Fair or any other piece of economic analysis over the past couple of years I’m not sure I go near Ireland. Its “hard working” workforce weren’t educated enough to avoid an epic recession, and will have to work even harder to pay off that negative equity.

  • David Ryan2

Well James, maybe there is great living, low taxes and a far more superior workforce to that of England or Ireland but I think you are missing the crucial point that the workforce is ENGLISH speaking (regardless if people of Warsaw/ Prague are fluent) and also the cultural disposition of Twitter would be far more aligned to that of England and Ireland then Warsaw or Prague…
Also Twitter, like many of the other tech companies, will invest and commit to Countries that they know more about in terms of Political system, corruptions etc knowledge that you cannot read up on but can get from other companies that have already penetrated the country of choice….

Zurich is a fantastic city that manages to carry an international flair while remaining comparatively small in size. Most people there speak english pretty well.
Saying that a language or dialect sounds like a throat disease isn’t nice or witty.
It’s also would work for many english dialects as well, including some often heard in London and Dublin.

Despite the name I’m actually English, so won’t be getting nationalistic in Dublin anytime soon, or at least not till we play Ireland in the 6 Nations. I’d never deny the attractions of the tax system, but that simply can’t be the only reason, otherwise they’d be based in the Bahamas. If you read this week’s Economist there’s a very balanced, pragmatic piece on the situation in Ireland, which covers many of these points.
