Disney acquires gaming engine startup to build HTML5 games outside of App stores
by Mike Butcher
on March 3, 2011

Disney has acquired an HTML5 gaming engine startup called Rocket Pack, based out of Helsinki, Finalnd. A Disney spokesperson told us today, exclusively: “We can confirm that The Walt Disney Company has acquired Rocketpack, an integrated solution for plugin-free browser game development. Through a merger agreement, Rocketpack is now a wholly owned subsidiary of The Walt Disney Company reporting into Disney Interactive Media Group (DIMG).”

Disney has not released the purchase price and asked us not to “speculate”. But we will. One source told us it was between $10 million and $20 million. It’s a fast acquisition – as of Feb 1, Rocket Pack was still developing the engine.

We’re also going to speculate as to why Disney wanted to own this IP. It’s obvious really: You can build awesome games outside App stores – straight onto the Web, no Flash required, as it uses HTML5.

Rocket Engine is very interesting. It’s built by and for professional game developers and is the only fully integrated solution for plugin-free browser game development. That means that if you are building multi-platform single player games, Facebook games or browser-based MMOs, you’ll probably be using RocketPack.

They’ve built their own HTML5 game called Warimals.

Just using javascript and CSS, there are no plug ins or installations required. It works on bad old Netbooks right up to iPads. You can even edit and create games on the iPad, because it works in Safari.

The founders call it “Google Docs for making games”. Watch the below video showing how easy it is to create a game.

It doesn’t matter how many tools or frameworks there is on top of HTML5. When it doesn’t work on the biggest browser IE and is slow in general. Flash is lightyear ahead and driven by a commercial company. Standards are great in the long run but isn’t the best only solution now. Use the techniques that suits best for your audience.

And if I was looking at this thread on anything other than an apple product I may have been able to view the movie. Apple IOS sucks ass. I’m constantly missing out on viewing interesting content because of it’s Flash incapabilities and general lack of support on anything non apple. Html5 is great, it’s a shame it has taken this long to find a replacement to the shoddy Adobe software. (Adobe suck too.)

Let’s see if jobs can now find solutions to HTML5. He failed to support flash because he wanted to dominate with h264.

Fail jobs, this time you’ve bitten more than your skinny ass can chew…

that is a basic physics not a game.. hmm..

HTML5, the end of appStore ! and the beginning of free uninterrupted monetization outside apple.

  • Eracer

The question is how is going Apple to find a way of having Disney to pay for users to play HTML5 games ?

It is not acceptable for Apple not to get money from users or content publishers. Guys, you have to understand it, and you are losing your time working around it. Believe me.

Apple will sell certificates to those websites for allowing Safari to go on HTML5 gaming website, and they will ban any other browser, just to make sure. It is just that simple.

    Beautiful, isn’t it ?

Hey, Disney, can you give me 10% of the amount you bought that company, it would have saved 90% of the loss.

All they have done is aquire an existing company, nothing good has actually happened for Disney or Jobs yet.

The bigger issue is that Disney is leading the path to App Store independence which IMO is a ‘burn’ on Jobs plan to trap everyone inside an Apple store.

  • oceandigital

Actually, now that I think of it maybe it is a strategy to aquire and sink the competition. Which would be a ‘burn’ on me. We will just have to wait and see.

It works on IE8+ Assuming good games get built for it, it will give IE6/7 users a reason to upgrade to IE8.

Second, the “most popular browser” is kind of irrelevant. Most browsers now support HTML5. IE share is below 50%, and a chunk of IE share is IE8+. (If you’re really desperate to run on older versions of IE simply use Chrome Frame.)

The claim that Flash is driven by a commercial company unlike HTML5 is ridiculous. HTML5 is driven by Google and Apple, both of whom are (a) commercial, and (b) better at engineering than Adobe (whose Flash team still can’t figure out how to do decent HW acceleration for anything much beyond zooming full-screen graphics and decoding video).

I agree with the last sentence: “Use the techniques that suits best for your audience.”

Bear in mind you buy an engine company for stuff you’ll be releasing in a year or more. What percentage of browsers will support HTML5 in 2012? How relevant will IE6 support be when there’s another 100,000,000 iOS and Android devices out there? (And, unlike IE6 users, those are paying customers.)

Not true anymore. Have you seen the molehill 3D api demos? http://blog.theflashblog.com/?p=2593

Here’s the interesting part about this. If Flash is doing GPU accellerated 3D on all platforms that run it, while browsers struggle to try to get WebGL up and running acceptably (Check the Chromium blog to see Google’s trials and tribulations regarding this beast) then suddenly the claims that the web doesn’t need Flash go straight out the window… and so does any “performance” excuse that Apple might have previously had for saying that its time has passed.

  • http://www.facebook.com/robcolburn Robert Wayne Colburn

    Good move in my opinion.

$15 mil is not a lot of money for Disney ($83.65B market cap), it’s less than sales tax would be on the Playdom purchase. They are getting a hopefully stable HTML5 engine, but more importantly it’s dev team, so they can direct it/slave-drive it.

Disney could have Playdom and Rocket Pack work together to porting their successful Flash web properties (see Club Penguin and Playdom Games) to HTML5, so they are ready for sale in the App Store.

  • http://www.facebook.com/robcolburn Robert Wayne Colburn

“fully integrated solution” is a fun marketing phrase, like “wholesome” it doesn’t really mean anything when you think about it.

    Aah yes but Flash sucks

  • Anonymous

Maybe because authoring is being re-invented?

But more likely because it is more appealing for people to go with standards. I mean even if you are a design shop and you have to sell to the clients “tastes” eventually they hear enough about how Flash is the problem with thier strategy as opposed to them. So it doesn’t really seem to work out for Flash.

  • Anonymous

For websites, sure, there’s rarely a good reason to go with Flash these days. Most interactivity can be achieved with jQuery or plain old Javascript. In that case, I wouldn’t argue with the client if they were under the apprehension that their Flash navigation bar was the problem. When it comes to games, however, you are suggesting that a client would prefer a technology that reaches 70% of their audience, does not perform as well, offers only a small subset of the features, and requires longer development time than Flash which has 98% penetration. All that compromise just to reach the 1% of users with iDevices that look to the App Store for their casual games anyway? The limitations of HTML5, when it comes to casual gaming are far, far greater than Flash.

  • Anonymous

Well, I can’t really argue with it because there are indeed benefits an negatives to any situation.

30% loss on whatever you were going to market too is quite a bit isn’t it? Especially with all the mobiles and ipads. Right?

Just to stay on topic. An HTML5 Authoring platform was just purchased by Disney. Not sure for how much, but I don’t see anyone buying up Adobe Flash knock offs.

  • Anonymous

It’s not yet the case in the US but there are more Flash 10.1-enabled Android phones globally than there are iPhones in total. The gap is only going to get wider.

Even when Flash had near universal penetration in web video and casual games, no-one was making or buying Adobe Flash knock-offs. I think part of the reason is that the Adobe Flash Professional authoring tool has evolved to be very suited to the job of producing Flash games so the necessity for alternative authoring environments is not great (there were also some licensing restrictions in place until May, 2008). Apart from some products with minor marketshare (such as Corel), no-one’s buying Photoshop knock-offs either. Does that imply that Photoshop is no longer relevant or used for professional editing? Quite the opposite is true.

  • Anonymous

So I am not going to say any of these valid arguments. But the lack of a point of authority for apps sort of opens up entirely new markets, profitable ones, irresponsible ones, and purposely destructive ones in sense.

I am not aware of the benefits of a “protected” system versus a “free for all”, versus a system which has been accused of proprietary security issues.

So maybe the best question to ask, is whether or not this company was bought to resell as product to subscribers, or maybe it is to be used internally to get to market better and faster?

I don’t really know. But for me personally, the distinctions that you draw are pretty much absent to those using flash for the wrong purposes.
