Techonomy3 is go! See you in Tel Aviv

A few weeks ago I had the privilege of visiting Tel Aviv for the first time and meeting some local mobile companies ahead of Mobile World Congress. What I found was an incredible entrepreneurial environment. Just four hours away from London, in Europe, Tel Aviv is almost like having Silicon Valley in your doorstep. Admittedly this is not exactly news. Israel has a long history of producing amazing tech companies, in part due to the foresight of the government in nurturing the local VC scene. However, I plan to write up my experiences further, in due course (little things like MWC and DLD have gotten in the way unfortunately), but suffice it to say that it was great to hang out with Blonde2.0 and many other tech companies at dinner.

But for now I’m really looking forward to heading back to Israel for the awesome Techonomy3 (grab tickets here) event, and before it, Kinnernet.

This year’s Techonomy3 event is taking place on April 5th, 2011, and will be a day filled with tech startup launches out of Israel. Hang on to your hats folks!

Organised by Orli Yakuel and Edward Resnick, Techonomy 2009 and 2010 were both supported by TechCrunch, and we’re doing that again, because it’s a great platform for Israeli companies to announce their new products. Get this: In 2009 Face.com emerged from the event, as did Interlude.fm. I’ll be joined by a great blogging colleague, Brad McCarty from TheNextWeb.

There’s no other agenda at Techonomy than that, but this year there are lots of companies in the mobile area and I hear there will be some pretty interesting launches.

So you’ll have to tune in here to TechCrunch Europe to get the updates. I better get my live blogging hat on I guess.

Meanwhile, Kinnernet is an invitation only event and I’m also privileged to have been invited. Hope to see you there if you’re going.

As much as we’d like to think of us being in Europe, Israel resides in Asia.

It’s gonna be great, looking forward to it.

Start-up Nation is a great read if you’re interested in the Israeli start-up phenomenon

If you think Tel Aviv is like Silicon Valley, you should head up to Haifa and see the Silicon Wadi. A drive down the main coastal roads through the north takes you by R&D for some of the biggest tech companies in the world.

Also, as commenter Jon F points out, Start-Up Nation is a great book that explains how Israel’s tech scene developed.

then you should drive up the hill, stop at the Irish House, and umm… ya just stop there

    Geographically? maybe.
    Politically? maybe, but not really.
    Culturally? certainly not.
    Economically, technologically? Hell no!

@Nadav, please clear this up for me, are you saying Asia is not economically or technologically sound to do business? or maybe I misunderstood. Because both of those issues are clearly not present in countries like south korea, where it’s a tech boom town.
