Tech City Launchpad – £1m in match-funding for startups in Silicon Roundabout
by Steve O'Hear
on April 4, 2011

The UK’s Technology Strategy Board has unveiled a new £1m fund to support “digital businesses” in the Tech City area around Old Street and Shoreditch in east London (‘Silicon Roundabout’ to you and me). The initiative will be announced by Universities and Science Minister David Willetts, while visiting the co-working space and startup community TechHub.

The Tech City Launchpad will be targeting “small or micro companies” in Silicon Roundabout – although applicants from anywhere in the UK can apply as long as the project will be predominantly Tech City-based – with up to £100,000 in match funding. In other words, a requirement of the competition is to partner this public money with that of the private sector.

The Technology Strategy Board, working closely with UK Trade & Investment, will however help the selected startups attract that extra investment through a funding workshop involving “key potential investors such as business angels, venture capitalists and other companies in the digital and creative industries.” The successful companies will also have twelve months to secure the match funding that’s required.

The competition will open on 6 May 2011 through an invitation for startups to submit a two-minute video pitch, which will be judged by the public and experts. Then about 20 project applications will be invited to submit written proposals, of which ten will tbe selected and offered up to £100,000 (match) funding each.

Hate to be partypooper but really don’t like idea of Gov giving grants to start-ups full stop, let alone on basis of a YouTube video judged by TSB. I know £1m is a drop in the ocean however really fail to see how this is good use of tax £.

party pooper. Gov’ts giving effective, efficient, transparent grants to help grow tax income and employment is a good idea. But not if it takes 5x the investment to manage. Which, with private sector partners, hopefully this won’t.

Article has missed the crucial part that you can only enter as a consortium, i.e. you have to be working on a project with another company. Makes the whole thing a waste of time. You’re going to have to be extremely clear with legal agreements up front about how your IP is split between the two companies in advance…besides which I don’t know of any startups who start on the premise of working collaboratively with other businesses in a ‘let’s all be friends’ sort of way. Networking and helping each other out is one thing, but why does the TSB have to insist on all their competitions involving multiple companies working together. It is madness.

Was at the event last night. It could have been better handled. The only person in the room who seemed to know the details was in the audience, not on the stage. The audience reaction was pretty hostile. I think all parties could have come a lot better prepared and the purpose of the event should have been clearer so the right people could have been in the room.

This grant is 50% match funding, paid monthly in arrears, and is specifically to fund “collaborative projects” between a minimum of two companies. “The projects will aim to develop a digital product or service to proof-of-concept, and/or a user facing trial.” The work will have to be done in the silicon roundabout area, though the companies don’t have to be UK companies.

**If you are a startup working on your own you will be ineligible for this grant because this will only fund collaborative projects.**

The nice thing is that the TSB will give their decision in advance, which will then make it a lot easier for the selected projects to fins the other 50%. If you can find another company to collaborate with and come up with a structure that the private investors are happy to invest in then go for it. (The only way I can see this working is that two companies set up a new limited company, which owns the IP, and takes the investment).

    It’s a 50% match funded grant.

I think you’ll find that the collaborate requirement will be dropped.
the TSB favour collaboration, which is fair enough, but I expect the terms of this to be changed to allow single businesses to apply, especially given the amounts are quite small

I hope so. That would make the scheme a lot more useful.
