Pixamid is what Color should be – agnostic about photo apps
by Mike Butcher
on April 28, 2011

When Color came out with its $41m play, a rather lesser known startup had planned to launch around the same time – as these things go. How often does that happen? Pretty darn often no doubt. But while Color got all the press – not least for its funding – the lesser known Pixamid has had to wait for its time in the sun. But while I have struggled – really I have – to get into Color, Pixamid has given me pretty much exactly what I wanted out of this kind of app [iTunes link] from the word go. Today at the (sixth annual) Next Web conference in Amsterdam, I met CEO and founder Bart Denny who demo’d the app to me.

Whereas Color locates you via GPS, Pixamid pulls its location data from Foursquare initially – other location services are planned. Once checked in you can see the photos either from just your friends there or everyone at the location, at that moment.

Pixamid thinks most people want more privacy on their photos, not less. So by default, Pixamid shares with only your friends at the same place as you – you can choose to share with everyone there too, via a simple switch.

Although Color might be cool in a world where everyone uses Color, in fact there is a world of people out there using Instagram, Facebook, Flickr, Twitpic, you name it. So Pixamid wants to pull in your friends’ photos from any of these services, automatically.

Here’s an interview with founder Bart Denny:

wow, this is way better than color. I really don’t want or need more elastic relationships, but I do want to see other peoples photos of interest. I don’t want to consume people, I want people’s content. (quote that please)

for god’s sake man, do a spell/grammar and an editor check before you post such a mess. i gave up reading the article half way!

Thanks Mike for bringing some of the underdogs to the light. It can be very frustrating for a startup to see someone launch the exact same thing with millions of funding right before you do, especially when the product is nowhere near as good.

Awesome Bart! Glad to see this up on TC, meet you at that Internet Discovery Day. Best of luck.

I want to echo the spelling and grammar comment earlier. “Rhe” instead of “the” — how does that possibly pass spell check? I’ve noticed this a lot in several TechCrunch articles. In fact, in the Sarah Lacy article today about LetsLunch, she spells “insistent” as “insistant.”

There have been NUMEROUS such errors that I’ve come across over the last month, to the point where I’m really not surprised when I see a spelling error in a TechCrunch article. I think that’s really sad. You guys do such a great job reporting and coming up with great angles that it’s a shame the poor grammar and punctuation detracts from your stellar content.

Even with the the grammar and spelling mishappens, I have to say that since I heard of Pixamid here first and think it’s a great idea and tremendous improvement on Color that I must give credit to TC.

I really don’t understand all the rage about color. It’s a cool concept, but it could have been executed way better. This above company is a great example. I predict, based on the low barrier to entry(I could hack out something similar using appcelerator in a few weeks), we are going to see a whole lot more app exploring this general concept.

Actually, that is an excellent quote/point as I feel the same way, as I’m sure others do. I am indeed interested in seeing others photos, videos, links, etc., but that doesn’t mean I’m interested in connecting with them necessarily. That’s where quite a few of the social startups get it wrong imo.

DID YOU UNDERSTAND WHAT THEY MEANT? YES? GREAT. MAYBE IN THE WRITE ALL IN CAPITALS YOU WILL UNDERSTAND BETTER. YOU KNOW, LIKE YOU’RE TALKING TO SOMEONE FOREIGN.

    Have a good day.

what “spelling and grammar comment earlier”? they’ve removed it.

I really like the app. Sounds like a no brainer. Downloading it now

And thanks to all the other commenters for pointing out the spelling mistakes. You guys are Awesome.

  • Al C

Look, this TC is big time now, and I’ve seen several misspellings. If you use a basic spell checker, those issues disappear. It takes all of five seconds and does wonders for your professional appearance.

AND EVEN THOUGH YOU WRITE IN ALL CAPS AND HAVE MADE YOUR POINT, YOUR POINT REMAINS EXCEEDINGLY STUPID.

I still do not get it why people are crazy on all these photo apps. To me all of them are fads.

The $43MM raise makes it a bit ironic, but, Color is a feature, not a company. Every photo creation device should be imbued with the power of Color and Eye-Fi, and then allow apps to layer on things like social graph resharing, privacy controls, etc.

As a company, Color needs to pivot into a more narrow launch vertical – say security or newsgathering… Imagine if any event that people captured on their cellphone cams was geotagged and put into a database paid for and accessed by news organizations worldwide, and then all the participants who filmed the event would get a cut of the licensing action (with a premium for actual footage/snaps used on the evening news). Incentivize citizen journalism, make it a simple no-click process… Color seems almost ideal for that.

Ditto for security cams – lots of cameras both municipal and privately owned. Right now it’s a cost center, but what if a bank could “share” footage from external facing street cams, which could then be pulled in via an API to a “free parking” search app for iphone. Again, it’s a “pennies per million” licensing type situation, but scaled out across all the cameras out there in the world, and all the potentially-beneficial “non Big Brother” uses, it might make a lot of sense to do, especially in the case of municipal cameras.

Firstly, Louis Vuitton Handbags pick the right material. Leather is always bright, which feels noble or bold. A smooth expanse of shiny leather without obstruction of any other embellishment will be appropriate for some formal occasions. It always requires women who carry it to wear a pair of high heels for it presents Monogram Vernis with a more graceful look. Also, leather is expensive most of time, which reflects the owner’s financial status invisibly. However, it is worthy a high price actually for it is always more durable than other materials and goes with any outfit perfectly.
