Single? Married? It’s Complicated? Wear your relationship status with Buump

Facebook may have over 600 million users but there’s still one problem: all the info is online!  How on earth are you supposed to know if that cutie you just met is single or married without access to his or her profile?! Ok, yes, you could just ask – but that’s not very tactful now, is it? So, rather than having to muster up any courage and attack the subject head on, we could all just wear our relationship status and make it easier for everyone. At least, that’s what Buump thinks we should do.

The company sells colorful plastic bracelets featuring the 5-different relationship status options in English for €5.99. There is also an additional pack with the 5 “looking for” options sold for the same price. And you can buy all 10 bracelets for €10.99 (the site also lets you buy in bulk and customize your own bracelets for orders of 1,000 or more).

Unfortunately, there doesn’t seem to be a bracelet enabling you to specify whether you are interested in men or women and even though it’s a France-based company, no foreign language options are available. Still, you’re sure to find the right way to describe your current relationship situation regardless.

Buump obviously is part of the recent trend of physical products based on Facebook content and concepts. For example, Printing Facebook is one way that you can immortalize your Facebook friends by printing out their photos as a poster. And similar content has also been inspired by Twitter’s platform, like Twittabling jewelry.

Buump also made a bracelet suggestion for IMF head Dominique Strauss-Kahn after he was arrested on Saturday.

‘It’s complicated’ for the weekends away with the lads, and ‘In a relationship’ for when we get back home?

    Kool. Hope they sell multi-packs.

Really?  People actually want, let alone need this?  Get a real life folks.  I can only hope the company is self-funded and burning their own  cash!

    hahahah.. awesome idea.

They already have things like this for engaged and married people. They go on the finger instead of around the wrist.

Where is the “it’s stupid” bracelet?   Have we fallen that far? Has Facebook transformed a lot of us into droids who defines themselves by catch phrases?  Alas, I am afraid that the only hope for us is for the Facebook server to blow up.

These would make more sense if they indicated what gender(s) the wearer is interested in, and they’d be even more useful if they indicated other more specific interests or conversation starters.

I remember a story regarding some similar bracelets on Brasil (Brazil for you guys i assume) few months ago…

There wasn’t anything writen on them, but the message was clear: From white to black, from a kiss to sex (or 3some)… there wasn’t a “current status” info on them like “in a relation”, but i guess it’s not that necessary.

At first sight, the idea is simple yet (somewhat) cool (for shy people/lazy people), but that isn’t the case.
While common sense would tell us this kind of “communication” would cause a few breakups, no one thought 13 (or less) year old kids would use them aswell.
So, the trend got big, and A LOT of kids is Brasil where using them, untill a girl (yes, 13 year old) using a “want to have sex” bracelet got raped.

I don’t really remember the details of this story, but the important part is here.. (Bing it :p )

    Yeah, NFC would work… not.

You’d have to be so close to her for it to work that you’d probably get laid before knowing she was married…then again, if you where in bed, i guess NFC chip would have to be in less ergonomic places.. :D

Jaron Lanier’s “You are not a Gadget” is very good on this topic – that computer design decisions in general and “social graph” language in particular inevitably dumbs us down into structures like this.

I think they missed the mark, they should have built bracelets for status updates for the people around you.  Could you image if you could get your boss to wear a status update, we did check it out here.

According to me to leave single is not so easy. Because of human needs supports after some age of period. People feel loneliness sometime when no one around them.
