Silicon Milkroundabout: How London startups took hiring back into their own hands
by Guest Author
on May 30, 2011

This is guest post by Ian Hogarth, co-founder of Songkick, relates how 45 startups in London’s East End got tired of being over-shadowed by the financial sector in London and created their own event to lure wanna-be startupers.

Sunday 15th May was a significant event for the London start-up community. 45 start-ups from across London gathered in one room with a single purpose – preventing banks and consultancies hiring the best UK engineering and computer science talent.

In the Bay Area the biggest recruitment challenge start-ups face is how to stand out from the crowd, with so many start-ups and a hiring boom. In London the start-up ecosystem has a different problem – developers aren’t aware start-ups exist. Most UK graduates in computer science assess their options via the ‘Milkround’, a giant careers fair held every year on university campuses across the UK. Banks, consultancies, Google, Microsoft and others spend tens of millions advertising to graduates and without the density of Silicon Valley, smaller start-ups are drowned out.

As a step towards correcting the balance, we organised a careers fair focusing exclusively on development jobs at London start-ups – the Silicon Milkroundabout. We hoped to round up 10-20 start-ups and a couple of hundred developers. It turned out that appetite for the event far exceeded expectations and within a week the event had attracted 1200+ developer applicants from universities across the country.

Over 45 start-ups joined in, with a waiting list of another 40 start-ups who wanted to be involved in the next event. Across the start-ups attending we represented over 150 development jobs from fashion (Ly.st) to gaming (MindCandy) to printing (Moo), with a mix of established and very early stage start-ups. The line ran down the street and we took turns managing a doorlist on the day, to ensure that no rogue recruiters made it in.

Every start-up got a minute to pitch their company then attendees could meet teams and work the room:

The whole thing came in on a budget of less than £15,000 split between the exhibiting companies. Straight start-up hustle. Many companies are already in the process of closing hires from the event. The other interesting aspect of the event is that many of the attendees were already in employment, at banks, Google, the BBC and elsewhere.

Some write ups by attendees echoed the feeling on the day:

Dustypixels
“I think it was a great event overall, and I don’t think I’ve been to one quite like it before. It had a real feeling that, after the last few crappy years, things are starting to pick up in the UK tech world and the money and funding (and therefore jobs and interesting work) are starting to appear again”

Thehungryant
“I haven’t seen anything like it in London before. What really pleased me was that all the companies were product companies. I remember the first dot com boom and London was a buzz on agencies that were growing like crazy to build websites for everyone and anyone.” –

Globalpersonals
“Sunday’s Silicon Milkroundabout event, previewed last week, was a huge success for us. We took five of the team to Bar Music Hall in London for the first start-up friendly recruitment event and spoke to hundreds of designers, engineers, testers and more.”

The event was such a success we’re going to set our sights much bigger next time. We’re going to run a follow up event in the Autumn to coincide with the main banking recruitment drive, targeting 5,000 developers and over 100 start-ups.

Sign up for the next event here and a similar hiring fair coming up from local co-working space TechHub here.

I think the problem is still going to be location, location, location. Sure attract lots more good developers and all you will get is the established recruiters aiming their headhunters from the square mile towards the north east instead.

Even if some of these job seekers get hired by these start-ups the big guys like Google and Microsoft will take them away if they so desire because they have a lot more money. But the little guy in the picture that is drinking the beer seems to be a heavy drinker.

This seems like such an awesome idea.. I can only hope that countries like Chile will stat doing something like this soon, as they are doing all they can to attract startups, but the talent base and number of devs willing to work for Startups are very low..

Well done and we need a lot more event like this one. I am myself trying to find a good developer in the UK and I don’t have the financial muscle of the Big Gun, but hey, them too were a startup at some point. I think young talented developer should join young startup and maybe at a later stage they will go to large company for the money. The pleasure on participating on the building of a company is Priceless (as Mastercard will say). If any of you are reading this, go to my website and see what i am up too, and see if it something you would like to be part of. http://bestvid.net/
    Thanks x
