The Europas will be identifying the hottest tech startups in Europe right now, taking hundreds of entries, sifting through them with a large advisory board and then submitting the picks to a public vote which the entire industry can participate in. The results will then be merged to find the winners.

To enter The Europas your startup’s product must have been launched within the last 2 years (from September 2009, the business can be older). If your startup has received external funding, then it can ONLY be a Seed or Series A round of funding. Startups that have taken Series B rounds and beyond are NOT eligible to enter. What’s so great about this year’s board (just as with last year’s) is that we have a fantastic spread of experience across the spectrum of the tech scene in Europe, and people who really know the scene inside and out.

The Rules

All internet and mobile tech companies from the continent of Europe, the Middle East and Africa are eligible for nomination. Nominees will be picked by TechCrunch Europe from our database of companies on CrunchBase, so make sure you have submitted your companies there. Certain awards have specified criteria but, otherwise, all companies and products are eligible for consideration based on their accomplishments made in the last year. Companies may be nominated for multiple award categories, and companies may win multiple awards. There are no fees to nominate companies for consideration, no fees to be a nominated company, and no fees to vote. Startups are defined as startup companies with between zero and three rounds of funding, under 3 and a half years old.

Everyone will be invited to vote on our resulting shortlist of the top companies in each category.

The Europas Advisory Board will advise on the selection of the top companies voted for per award category, winner and, only where appropriate, also advise on the selection of a ‘Highly Commended’ award finalists they wish to recognise.

Finalist companies will be most welcome to join us for the Award Ceremony. Acceptance speeches will be in 140 characters or less.

The Europas Advisory Board reserves the right to discard any and all votes that it reasonably determines to be fraudulent or submitted by bots or other computer-generated voting applications.

It is on July 14 in London, 6.30pm at TechHub, Ground Floor, 76-80 City Rd, by Old Street tube station

Here’s how it will work:

1. Grab a ticket.
2. Work on a one minute “no slides” pitch for your idea/startup/company, and a 3 minute version with slides – but keep it very simple. PDFs are best.
3. Come along to the event and pitch your idea for one minute, no slides.
4. A group of judges selected from the startup and investor community will then select the ones they want to hear more from.
5. We’ll then load up the selected 3 minute pitches onto a laptop and projector and the finalists will face off with eachother for the glorious title of “Summer Pitch Battle Emperor”. The final 6/7/8 startups who get selected for longer pitches will be refunded their entrance fee, as is our ‘no pay to pitch’ policy.
5. Afterwards we’ll do some “speed networking” over drinks.

That’s pretty much it. No need to submit a pitch beforehand. Just turn up ready to pitch.

One thing that is absolutely crucial is that we won’t support events where startups have to pay to pitch. It’s fine for startups to pay for demo-pit tables in an exhibition, but we are trying to break the cycle of pay-to-pitch in Europe which does not support innovation or an entrepreneurial culture.

For those that we select as partners, TechCrunch Europe will promote events before they happen in an event listings post and on TechCrunch Global. We’ll also send a writer (usually me, Mike Butcher) and if there is any news about companies and the event content we’ll of course cover it.

We’ll offer a variety of partner packages (contact us for details below). These will be a) a Techcrunch Europe branded event where we work closely with you b) an “in association with Techcrunch Europe” event where we work with an existing name or brand. We’ll also work with events that want to be creative about naming, e.g. “KrakowCrunch” or BelgradeCrunchUp, or MaltaEuroCrunch or anything like that. It’s a little like the TEDx idea, in that we’d like to work with you to make it a great event. In addition we’ll be looking at smaller meetup-style events in the UK and I’ll also be available as a speaker for events in Europe. As with all of this, contact us as above.

We’ll be slimming down our “in-house” day-long events (GeeknRolla and The Europas, postponed to September) and one conference in continental Europe, location to be decided.

To be clear, none of the above will affect our editorial commitment to covering tech companies and startups in Europe, whether we have partnered with a particular event or not.

Aside from some questionable “startups” there were several kick-ass products presented, one of which would receive the STARTEurope award, as voted by an expert panel consisting of people such as Amy Hoy from Slash7.com, Markus Wagner from i5invest or Bernhard Thalhammer from recently launched Austrian early-stage VC First love capital. It was a pleasure seeing Austria’s Startup scene evolve and since it was also filled with numerous people from the US and other european countries it has shown that EU startups are slowly but surely consolidating, bringing in people from diverse countries.

The winning startup of last night, Qriously, is vividly depicting this “Europeanisation” among Startups, since one of its founders is originally from the US and just moved to Austria.

The application allows mobile developers to inject a code snippet into any app that uses mobile ads for monetization, which turns those ads into a real-time feedback/voting tool. Thus, whenever market research organizations or politicans would like to do polls they can simply buy a number of “clicks” upfront and their submitted question will then be displayed on all apps using Qriously. Although there’s not much to see at their website currently, according to several questions asked by the panel, the startup already has 1 Million installs and is currently self-sustainable by what it makes out of their cost-per-poll-question model.

Their model is compelling and from what I can tell the execution is also extremely well done, which is why it’s hopefully not the last time we’ll here about them.

Play.fm, a Soundcloud competitor, with the self-proclaimed “largest database of DJ sets”, managed to build an app for the infamous Boxee. By last night they were able to present a beta version of it that is soon going to be available to all Boxee users. It lets you smoothly flick through all available DJ Sets from their web application, using the iPhone as a remote control and also adding iTunes-esque visuals for the big screen.

It has been the second time that the STARTeurope event took place and with other cities on the way this event is another great way to meet fellow startups and investors.

Jimmy Maymann has 15 years of managerial experience within advertising, marketing and new media, now as executive chairman for goviral, specialists in branded content distribution, which he co-founded in 2005. His career stated with the establishment of the Internet consulting business Neo Ideo in 1995, where he served as the CEO until it was sold to Leo Burnett in 2001. He continued as strategic director in Leo Burnett. In 2004 he moved to Arc Worldwide, as a Global Discipline Head overseeing global accounts and developing new competences in emerging media. Jimmy has a Master in International Marketing and an Executive MBA from London Business School and he is a “regular” speaker at the Cannes Lions – presenting at the conference in 2007, 2008 and 2009.

Jacob has been working in the venture capital business for six years. He is specialised in investment management, transactions and development of technology companies. He has been involved in seven exits and invested and attracted more than 60 million dollars for technology start-ups. Jacob has founded several successful technology companies and has been member of several boards focusing on building and developing businesses. Prior to joining NorthCap Partners, Jacob was based in New York attracting American technology investments for Danish companies and worked three years in Israel focusing on technology exchange and venture capital. Tine joined Venture Cup after selling her own startup company mid 2008. Nikolaj Nyholm, Sunstone Capital

Nikolaj Nyholm is General Partner at Sunstone Capital, a Nordic early-stage technology venture capital firm with €400 million under management. Nyholm most recently served as CEO of the people-photo-tagging service Polar Rose. He was previously the co-founder of Imity, an open-source mobile social networking platform sold to Zyb/Vodafone, of Organic Network (creators of OpenWRT), and of Speednames/Ascio, Scandinavia’s largest domain name registrar sold to London AIM-listed GroupNBT. Tommy Ahlers (born 1976) is a Danish serial entrepreneur best known for the social networking and mobile backup site ZYB, launched in 2005 and sold to Vodafone Europe BV for nearly $50m in May 2008. Before founding ZYB, where he has held the position of CEO since the company’s inception, Ahlers spent six years in strategy and management, partly in the mobile industry. He was previously with McKinsey & Company for more than four years, where he served as an engagement manager working with mobile operators to shape their strategies. In addition to ZYB, he also founded another start-up which provided a global SMS-service to mobile users. Ahlers holds a masters degree in law from the University of Copenhagen, graduating in 2000. Anil Hansjee, Google

Anil joined Google in September 2006 as Head of Corporate Development for Europe, Middle East and Africa, based in London. Prior to joining, Anil was a Principal with the venture capital firm IDG Ventures, where he was board director of one of their portfolio companies, the mobile music company, Shazam Entertainment. Between mid 2000 and end of 2001, Anil was a Vice President for corporate finance with Bear Stearns International in London. Between mid 1997 and mid 2000, Anil was a member of Chase Manhattan Bank’s corporate finance group both in New York and London. Anil joined Chase’s corporate finance team after spending the first 7 years of his professional career as a software engineer first with UBS then Chase. When a conference speech involves teaching VCs to play flutes and a clip from a decidedly adult-themed TV show (Marcy’s Waxing Parlour scene from Californication, if you must know) to make its point, you know you’re watching something a little different. And when the speaker drives for 18 hours from Copenhagen to London to give a speech – thanks to Volcano-related flight cancellations – it’s safe to say he’s a bit more passionate about his work than the average Joe.

Flutes and soft porn aside, here are just some of the things Lund had to say…

“I’m 38 years old, I have four kids and I’m an entrepreholic – I can’t stop doing it. I love sales – but we need much more sales.” Lund makes clear he made a “shit load” of money from his $50,000 investment in Skype, which sold to eBay for a $2.6 billion in 2005.

But he doesn’t avoid the issue of his financial problems, or how he lost his money:

“I had $50 million on my account, I was a little bored and then I had a debt of $200 million. I was afraid for a while, but then I found how nice people can be – I’ve had a blast.

When I had the $50 million I was like Santa Claus. Everyone who drank a glass of wine with me ended up with $500,000 for their start-up – no wonder I was so popular.

These days Lund is more “monogamous” in his portfolio commitments and spends most of his time on two start-ups: Everbread and Tradeshift

Lund’s advice for people seeking to follow his path of high-risk tech investment? “If you want to do these things you need to find out how close to the edge you dare to get. You can go into real estate… or extremely risky dangerous ventures.”

“You have to find the right way in – find the right team and project and know a little bit about the market. Most importantly you have to trust your gut feeling and the people that you’re with.” Lund warns that to really success in stat-ups, you need to “be ready to do everything and I mean everyhing”.

When asked what he thought was the next “big thing”, during a fireside chat with TechCrunch Europe editor Mike Butcher, he replied “I have no fucking clue.” He he offered the suggestion that whatever “it” is, it will be about risk, networks and following hobbies and interests. But when looking to the future, be warned: “There’s a fine line between vision and hallucination.”

Money is less important than people, according to Lund: “Don’t believe that money can take you anywhere. It’s a super-nice tool, but it’s about the people and creating sales, or a product that can virally sell itself.”

The start-ups game isn’t for everyone – Lund is proof of how much success and difficulty can happen to one man. Seven out of ten start-ups fail, he says. “You can burn out – maybe some of you should just pack your shit and go home. I’ve been through it.

“I think you should do it, but just be careful because it fucking hurts when they slam the door of the court in your face and say you’re bankrupt and you can’t start a company for the next 12 months.

“It’s extremely important not to buy the textbook – do it your own way. Right now, have a pretty fast path to revenue and don’t be too shy.”
